Wisdom heard today from an overlanding old-timer about where to start

The goal should (could?) be to end up with the vehicle lighter than it was before preparing to go wandering, at least before adding people and consumables (food, fuel, water...). On our LC80 and our Montero we took out the 2nd and 3rd row of seats, reducing mass (weight) by around 100 kg...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

So, based on our trips around South America (17 border crossings in 11 months) and Africa (12 border crossings in 10 months) this is still a long way from helpful... : (

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Good point ( I should have read all the information). So - not a problem with rain on the dish. How about rain in terms of acting as a barrier to the signal? Some of the rain in which we've travelled is very heavy. How about snow? If subsequent posts answer this I apologise for time-wasting.

Poll: I approach trip planning by...

It depends somewhat on the trip, however we generally follow a process: 1) Using fora, guides, internet sites, and information from others we pick the places we would like to include in the base plan (the dots) 2) We pick a sensible route (join the dots) 3) Using online information - google...

Starlink for Overlanding Build & Mods

Perhaps a question answered somewhere in the thread, or in the material available from Starlink, however... I understand that any block to the satellite is a concern. WHat do we do when it's raining? Is an umbrella a barrier? How about the rain itself?

    Chevrolet Spark

The Spark is more capable than one might think we rented on for a week in Colombia and took it on some tracks which were quite rough - it did far better than expected!

Poll: When you camp, do you normally have cell service?

Exactly: in Botswana cell coverage disappears within a few km of any town, in Namibia coverage is far better - same general region but evidently a different focus on communications. The longest we've been out of cell coverage on recent trips has been in Australia - wide open spaces and small...

Heads up if you go larger tires

I was probably oversimplifying my comments... On a manual transmission I choose the point at which I change gear based on the engine characteristics and the power or torque I want to have available; rapid acceleration means holding onto a lower gear until cresting the power curve, "walking"...

Heads up if you go larger tires

PS: we should be changing gear based on engine rev/min not indicated road speed.

Heads up if you go larger tires

I suspect that I was not very clear. I'm suggesting that it's simpler to use the GPS to indicate speed, and NOT to do anything to connect the GPS output to the engine controls in any way - i.e., ignore the speedometer and use the GPS to show your speed. re tyre wear - a 2 mi/h inaccuracy may...

    Deep South

Hi and welcome - how far south? Patagonia is amazing....

Heads up if you go larger tires

The simplest solution is as OP suggests - the GPS gives you an accurate speed - it's better than adjusting the speedometer, which is never correct (except by chance) and the speed indicated will vary as the tyres wear anyway.

Using a Toyota Hilux for a Europe to West Africa to South Africa to East Africa Roundtrip

The Hilux will be fine, although I suggest rotating who gets to sit in the back, which will be less comfortable. For what it's worth I suggest considering a Montero (=Shogun=Pajero) or LC Prado/100/80 and a combination of ground tents or RTT & ground tent, to give a more comfortable ride for all...

    US West Canceled trips?

USD 2000 in 2 weeks? Wow - that’s USD 143 per day. On our trip to Iceland last year we spent USD 823 in 5 weeks - USD 29 a day on average, and we covered significantly more distance overall than our average. Fuel price in Iceland was around USD 7 per gallon. How far are you travelling each...

    Hey! From Kuwait!

Hi and welcome. How are borders at the moment? If I lived in Kuwait I'd try to spend a lot of time in Oman, however have no idea whether you can get there at present.

Seriously, let's talk about overlanding spices.

We always carry spices and use them routinely. Best spices we've found so far : - South Asian mix from Victoria Street Market, Durban - Chili powder from Shamvura Camp, West Caprivi - Artisan Aji, Mitú, Vaupés We carry them in the "cupboard" which is a standard part of the rear door of the...

    Unusual Gear

The only item which springs to mind is the machete we bought in Misiones, Argentina. We had decided not to take a machete, based on the potential need to explain having one in the event of police/military checkstops in cities, however after having to deal with a fallen tree across the "road" in...

    US West Canceled trips?

Fuel prices would need to hit USD 25.00 per US Gallon before I'd think about cancelling (and I'd postpone, not cancel). Other factors are far more critical. Our 2018 West/Central/East Asia trip was postponed for geopolitical reasons; our 2020 South Asia trip for pandemic reasons; our 2021 Canada...

What are some options for good gas mileage in overlanding vehicles?

Oh yes, and a couple of rented Subarus too. ...and now that I think about it a Grand Cherokee (in the less than 20 mi/US gal category).
