Looking for camp bedding that packs down.

When we were looking for a duvet for the "big trip" around Western Canada this year we happened to go into Muji for something else and found that they have duvets, sheets, pillows, and pillowcases. We bought a complete set and found the duvet very warm, and packable into a relatively small bag...

Where did your weekend take you?

From Baile Herculane to Timișoara, then on to Budapest.

    3rd row seats Overlanding Rig

Our Montero has three rows and when we're at home we put the third row back in to give a sensible capability for local trips (when on "big trips" they come out and we put the bed, fridge, and storage in instead). Our LC80 had the same set up - third row seats out while travelling.

    Rig getting heavy

    Great summary, thank you.

    New adventure upcoming: Trans Africa

Good post - thank you. One thing we've found is that although we've hardly every needed the first aid kit for ourselves, we've used it to help others often. For example a child with burns from a campfire, someone who had a cut on his hand doing some repairs: it's a good idea to take more of...

Dempster Highway: Peel River and Tsiigehtchic ferries

In case anyone has wondered about the ferry crossings at Peel River and Tsiigehtchic, I thought I'd post a link to videos of the two crossings this year. The post covers more than just the ferries, however scroll down to the videos, if interested...

Are my wheels and tires big enough to off-road!?

You could drive that vehicle across Africa as it was when you bought it. What you have now will be fine.

    Logest offroad trek?

Yes I understand completely. We've covered a fair proportion of Ruta 40, but not all in one run. As you do, we rarely stay on a specific highway, and in the case of the longest trip during which we were on this route we crossed the northernmost section, then headed east for a while, crossed...

    Logest offroad trek?

So, I was reflecting and recall also: Kazungula to Maun to Francistown to Selebi-Phikwe (now a lot of this is tarred but when I first covered this route it was all unsurfaced - I din;t record the distance however it would have been around 1200 km / 750 miles. If I include the outbound route...

When we talk about tools, we also have to talk about health and safety measures.

Excellent posts! We routinely talk through risks at a tactical level - when doing anything to the vehicle or starting any other task, and also at a strategic level - such as when planning a trip (e.g,, "Should we visit Kenya at all, given that the elections are next month?"). We have a rule...

    Vehicle specific tools: LR Defender

I can't add much, since we have had virtually no need for any field repair/maintenance for many years, however your post reminded my of friends who used to come into town once every 6 weeks or so to pick up supplies and for whom my big adjustable spanner was the only way they could replace wheel...

    Logest offroad trek?

As always, it depends on what's meant by "offroad"; however: In terms of "off-pavement" I guess this would be the Dempster+Tuktoyaktuk road so, that would be 2012 km / 1256 miles from the start of the Dempster and back. Another long run - the Gibb River Road, 1005 km / 624 miles from Derby to...

Medical Insurance for full time in the U.S.?

I very rarely need anything - in much of the non-OECD world pharmacy products are inexpensive so I just pay and leave. If I were to buy anything in countries where prices are high (like the USA) then I can reclaim up to USD 220.

Medical Insurance for full time in the U.S.?

Could you define "outrageously expensive"? My coverage (global) with MAPFRE costs me about USD 5000 a year.

    New adventure upcoming: Trans Africa

Most of my current contacts are in other bits of North Africa, Eastern Africa, and in Zambia and Zimbabwe. However I can no doubt dredge up some help if needed. One gem in Namibia is Udo in Lüderitz - the best workshop in the country +264 632 04051. Yes - I lived in Pointe Noire, and...

    New adventure upcoming: Trans Africa

Excellent! I'll watch with interest. I know you need little advice however I'd be pleased to offer thoughts on anything if you have specific questions: Morocco - limited experience (a lot more further east but you don't plan this) Gabon - a little experience Congo - lived there two years...

    Do I "need" bigger tires?

I would increase diameter no more than one size step, if at all - the standard size is capable of what you want to do. Depending where you plan to go, bear in mind the availability of replacement tyres - not much good going to a tyre size you cannot replace easily.

rig weight, how do you pack?

I guess we're at the other end of the spectrum - the aim is to make the vehicle lighter than it was when new. We've succeeded with the one in which we made our most recent trip around Western Canada. Rear seats out - mass reduced, bed installed (2x4 and plyboard) - mass up again but less than it...

    Camp coffee!

Aeropress - no electricity needed, makes good coffee. Heat the water on the stove and make coffee with it. We also have a Handpresso, which does need electrical power, does make better espresso than the Aeropress, but which we didn't bother to take on our last big trip (no need for two coffee...
