Extreme cold camping - Driving to Tuktoyaktuk in March

I'm not sure what "extreme cold" means however I was stuck for three days in Inuvik once - minus 110 deg C (with wind chill)!

    West Africa & Beyond

Sounds great! I can't help for West Africa however if you continue into Central Africa, and on to Southern Africa I'd be happy to offer thoughts/suggestions (I lived in Congo 2 years and Botswana 1-12 years, and we know a little of Gabon, more of Angola, and a fair amount for Namibia and RSA, as...

PS: check road conditions on 511 - there are websites for each province, and you can sign up for Twitter feed as well.

    What to do first?

AS long as you choose AT tyres you'll be fine. Based on having travelled on a wide range of ATs in the last 15 years we've ended up with Toyo Open Country ATs. The BFGs are excellent although a little noisy on asphalt. Geolandars are a good choice also. I've seen lots of good reports on the...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

Looks like the road somewhere between Halfmoon Bay and Pender Harbour? Beautiful area! Here's a pic from when it was warmer this year, although not as warm as it can be...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

I agree, for the TC Highway you really don't need a satphone or PLB. We'll keep our satphone for a while yet though.

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

I had a 1947, a 1951, and a 1952. The last one was bought in "Thieves Market" in Singapore for USD 75. Sadly lost in the mists of time...

New Mandatory Death Valley Backcountry Use Permit

Thanks for sharing. It seems bizarre that you can obtain 2 of the 5 permits online, but not the other 3.

2002 International Utility Vehicle - Talk me out of it

I'm not going to try to talk you out of it - you have decided that you want it : ) However... it will be expensive to ship (and you're going to have to go RoRo which is less secure). Spares and maintenance are likely to be a challenge outside the USA/Canada. Secure parking will be expensive...

    Oil pan drain plug

...and, the problem with tapping a new thread is that there's less metal in the opening, and hence more possibility of the failure of the connection. New pan is the best solution I think.

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

Yes, I take your point. As noted, I've never needed chains in Canada, however have needed: - a spare wheel - three times in the last decade - tyre repair kit - ten times in the last decade (twice for us, eight times for others) - safety kit - rarely, however it's a legal requirement for us...

    Need new tires!

Our experience: 2010-2018 in South America - Dunlop Grandtrek AT3 - good tyre on the highway, OK offroad - Pirelli Scorpion AT - similar to the Dunlops - Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S - the best of these three - good on the highway, more capable offroad. 2017 - In 2017 we made a "big trip" through...

Driving Across Canada in the Winter - West to East

Excellent advice from MOAK. Driving on snow hasn't changed much in 30 years. In the first week of snow every winter there are lots of fender-benders - people forget, but are reminded quickly - it's nearly always lack of caution and inadequate stopping distance With caution, common sense, and...
