    Hopeless goals

So, "East of the Ural" - I realise that you probably mean the regions of Asia immediately east of the Urals, however in terms of "all the other regions" which are "east of the Urals" and which currently present little or no security concerns: UAE & Oman South Asia except Pakistan SE Asia...

What are some options for good gas mileage in overlanding vehicles?

Vehicles we’ve owned or rented in the last couple of decades with better than 20 mi/US gal and range of 500 km or so: Nissan X Trail T30 Nissan X Trail T31 Hyundai Tucson Chevrolet Tracker Vehicles we’ve owned or rented in the last couple of decades with worse than 20 mi/US gal and range of...

    Mpg Worries

I think the key is how far you want to be able to go between filling stations. The higher the consumption the less the range (obviously), or to be more practical, the more reserve you have to carry, affecting fuel consumption, stability, braking, and wear and tear. I guess this is the key (and...

    Our next project?!?!?!?

Looks great! One question - does the floorpan provide enough rigidity, or is the new structure, coupled with the floorpan, rigid enough?

    Dangerous National Parks

I understand your meaning, and cannnot help but add that the lack of fencing is not dangerous, it's the lack of common sense (not as common one might hope).

    Dangerous National Parks

Good plan, as long as you're not travelling internationally, or at least between certain nations.

    Dangerous National Parks

It's akin to the signs which say "Dangerous bend ahead" (or something similar) - the bend's not hazardous, it's just sitting there - the danger is incompetent drivers. Our visits: 1. Grand Canyon National Park 3. Kings Canyon National Park (the one north west of Uluru) 5. Rocky Mountain...

    Water Management

If it's a short trip, then a couple of 1L bottles, and we take personal bottles, refilling whenever water's available. Long trips - a 5L bottle, 2 personal bottles each, and refill whenever we can. Trajectories with no water resupply for a week - as above, and also 2 x 10L water cans. More...

    Getting started

Good advice from others. My first "overland" trips - Peugeot 404 Wagon - personal kit, extra water, camera and a few rolls of film, and that was it. My first "overland" trip in the USA - Datsun pick-up - personal kit, hiking tent, sleeping bags, camera. As you travel you'll discover what...

Direction Needed - Literally... Alps into Italy...?

I agree with heading into Italy - if you're focussed on the Alps then the Italian Alps will serve. I recall on one occasion driving north and entering the San Gotthard tunnel in sunshine and 30 C and coming out at the northern end into 14 C and rain.

    Traction boards

Depends on the speed - if you're on forestry tracks at 80 km/h then octopus bands will hold them; if you're heading south on A35 at 220 km/h then probably not. I see that a lot of people mount them vertically at the rear - check local regulations regarding hazardous protrusions if you do this.

    MaxxTraks alternative.

The cheapest alternative is used car mats. If you can find the mesh grating used for flooring on external stairways it can be relatively inexpensive. On the other hand, if you get the best, you'll get the best performance. I have no idea of prices where you are however we chose ARB TredPros.

    97 land rover discovery?

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to travel widely and not do much (if any) "non-routine maintenance" then I'd pick the XTerra. If you want to travel widely and look forward to spending time looking for spares and installing them, as well as doing a lot of pre-trip work, then the...

    Tires

2010-2018 - Tyres we have used in South America: Dunlop Grandtrek AT3 - good tyre on the highway, OK offroad Pirelli Scorpion AT - similar to the Dunlops Yokohama Geolandar A/T-S - the best of these three - good on the highway, more capable offroad. 2017 - In 2017 we made a "big trip" through...

    Pre-Trip Checks?

We have checklists for daily local, daily long trajectory, driver change, and weekly checks. If you're maintaining your vehicle properly then I don't think you need anything more than a daily check of fluid levels , belts, and lights, a check of windscreen wiper function, a brake check in the...

We are driving around the world. Right now.

...and, if you're unfortunate enough to get into one of those calls where they ask you to "say in a few words the reason for your call" it's worse! There is presumably an expectation of a particular accent, which I don't have; I end up saying why I'm calling in a number of accents - Texan...

    New Tire Advice

OP is marginal on ATs, so MTs are a bridge too far I think. Interesting to hear of the wear rate on the Toyo MTs. For us MTs are not of interest - too noisy, wear quickly, and we rarely go anywhere where MTs are needed.

    New Tire Advice

Over the last decade we've run (in order of preference based on the experience) Pirelli Scorpions, Dunlop Grandtrek, BFG T/A, Yokohama Geolandar, and Toyo Open Country. This is for about 70% highway/25% unsurfaced/5% offroad. We ended up with the Geolandars as our best pick, although when we...
