Hello all, I'm about to start my journey into this rabbit hole! I've been looking for a good vehicle to start. What I'd really like to find a 1st gen xterra, and there are several out there, but I ran across a 97 land rover discovery for a good price and relatively low miles for the age. Thoughts on the land rover disco to start a beginner rig?

Depends on what you're looking for. If you want to travel widely and not do much (if any) "non-routine maintenance" then I'd pick the XTerra. If you want to travel widely and look forward to spending time looking for spares and installing them, as well as doing a lot of pre-trip work, then the LR could be a better bet, if the price is right.

Disco I and IIs are some of the best looking 4x4s out there but they are known to be quite unreliable. if you're mechanically inclined and you like tinkering to the point of engine replacement, Discos are for you. Some years or Xterra and other Nissan trucks/suvs have problems with coolant leaking into the transmission. I'm not sure which, but that's something to look into. A 4th gen 4 Runner or 2nd gen Tacoma are solid, reliable options.

I agree with what's been said already. I love the look and feel of an early Discovery......but the engines, transmissions and electrical systems are rubbish.
