Good question - in our case it's a combination of assuring retirement, and enjoying life now. So - we (pre-pandemic) had successfully reached the point of a rotation - work a year and fill the piggybank, travel a year. So 2019 was 10 months in Australia and 1 month in SE Asia. Obviously the...
An update on travels within Argentina. We entered the country by air on Nov 3rd (left home on the 2nd). Permission to enter as tourists was from Nov 1st. Getting there in our own vehicle was (as remains) impossible. We spent 6 weeks in Patagonia, rented 3 different vehicles (it was supposed to...
It depends where:
In Australia for example, the Red Centre is too hot in summer (and some places are out of bounds), the north is (for most) too wet in wet season.
In Argentina, Patagonia is great in Spring and Autumn, cold and windy in winter, and hot and dry in summer.
In East Africa, it's...
Renting in Iceland needed some planning, although there are lots of agencies, there are also lots of visitors. We did some investigation online fairly early and found a vehicle, with RTT, kitchen kit, etc., for a reasonable rate (in Iceland terms). When we were there we talked to people who were...
I'm sure you've run the numbers however I guess you're aware of the fact that shipping rates have gone through the roof? We had a quote to ship from Colombia to the USA which was double the price to ship from Colombia to Australia in 2019. 3-4 months is a bit of a tipping point I guess; we...
It's not just containers, boats are tied up and prices have gone up. Having said that I suspect that you're right that the impact on Ro-Ro is less, and on "ferry routes" (as opposed to ad hoc Ro-Ro shipping) the prices are probably about the same. Unfortunately there are no "ferry routes" from...
Argentina's land borders are open now (since Oct 1). Many others remain closed (Colombia to anywhere for example).
re shipping - costs have gone through the roof - we had a quote for Cartagena to the USA which was double what we paid from Cartagena to Australia in 2019!
Will we be able to...
Q1. We don't have a driveway, however in the parking slot in the basement we have our Montero 3.8L – upgraded suspension with a 50mm lift, winch, snorkel, UHF radio, and a set-up for a bed, storage, and refrigerator when we go on “big trips”.
Q2. We don't really have a strategy, however...
What do you want to use it for?
We have a Garmin GPSmap 64, and previously had (still have) a Colorado 300. We use them to know where we are (as in - 11 km further to reach the river, if there are no more fallen trees across the track) and not for navigation, we load appropriate maps (T4A...
If you travel for more than a year some stuff gets more complicated - annual registration renewal, IDP, carnet (if you have one), insurance, etc. If more than two years then more complicated still. Some items can be handled online, others not.
Thanks for the photos - love the wooden road!
Clearly a gap we need to fill - when we were in the area (arriving from the Nullarbor) we took the Balladonia Road to Duke of Orleans Bay, then wandered west more or less along/near the coast (with a short 600 km side trip to Wave Rock and back and...
...or, restated - Doing wide open spaces, park roads, places Hmmwv's can go, in a small rig is less comfortable. Taking a fullsize to tight trails can be impossible .
Good points - perhaps the key is what we mean by "substantial clearance". If looking for what I think of as a reasonable lift for overland travel (landfaring) then the increase in stresses is not that much compared with the benefit of 50-75mm added clearance. The main benefit if this added...
Only if it's a solid axle - IS will permit a lift which increases the clearance for the differential housings. Also by sticking to standard (or near standard) wheels/tyres the gearing will remain the same and the stresses on the drive train will not increase above the original design rating.
