    Has Overlanding Become Trendy?

Back in the 70's I lived in Bolivia. I went with my father up to Ulla Ulla near the Peruvian border. We went in some 4x4 suburbans and Land Cruisers. Back then we called it camping. The "Roads" were mainly trails and the sky at night was uncluttered from light pollution. 40 some years later I...

Texas Hill Country (My Farewell Tour)

Yup, I'm committed to Jambo also. If I could make it down that way from DFW and meet up in time to head out, I'd consider it.

    Grilling Options

Also, as far as pots and pans go, I found this on sale at Gander Mountain (Although I'm using the link to REI) GSI Bugaboo cookware It's aluminum non stick cookware and nests up together. I used it for the first time while out in Big Bend for a week. As for washing up, I have a good scrubber...

    Grilling Options

Great questions! I've got a coleman stove that has a burner and grill on it. That has been my go to grill for a long time. It can do 2 pans or pots at once, depending on size. In a burn ban situation it also works great for grilling steaks or chicken when I can't do it over a fire. I admit, I...

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

So, the last thing I bought was now some LED interior lights for the front and cargo area, plus LED map lights from Diode Dynamics. The other day my wife was asking me what I want for my rig, since my birthday is almost here... Looks like MaxTrax!

Anyone ever do this route? West of Austin, TX?

No sir, I haven't been down that way. I've been in and around Wimberly on some of the backroads, but not that one. A buddy of mine has hit some of these roads, and I think some of it was on your link. Here's the write up he did. (he's on this forum too, I think)...

To lift or not to lift

You beat me to it. Yeah, US Offroad for sure. Great product. One thing I'd read up on are your rear lower control arms. I know on the FJ they aren't so beefy. I went ahead and upgraded those. Over on the FJ forums there is a very smart post about the first $2000 spent on your vehicle. It might...

To lift or not to lift

The steel skids will slide over the rocks better, aluminum tends to hang more. Or so I've been told by folks that have had both.

What is the last thing you bought and plan to buy?

Last thing I bought was a rear bumper from Trailworx. Next thing is/should be some Maxtrax. At least 2, but 4 would be best. Later down the line is an Ethos Offroad Trailer!

    wanna learn more obout overlanding

Welcome! Camping is half of this "Overlanding" fun! The other half is finding the right vehicle to take you where you want to go. Sometimes the 2nd half involves modifying said vehicle. Either way, jump around this forum and have fun!

If you had to start over, what different rig would you start with?

Current and first Rig is my 2013 FJ Cruiser. I'm the only one in my family that enjoys hitting the trails and finding fun places to camp. My only beef is the amount of space, I could use a little more depending on what the trip is. If I had to start over, I would look at the current 4Runners...

    Central Texas - Woohoo

Arlington here, I go down to Wimberley every so often. I need to hit Hidden Falls though, never been. @DallasRunnin There are some OHV parks close to us. One in Bridgeport and one in Gilmer. Both are pretty fun to wheel at, with all levels of trails. Also, don't forget the Toyota Lone Star...

To lift or not to lift

My 2 cents for whatever it's worth: Your vehicle is very capable in it's stock form. Get to know how it handles on and off the trail the way you have it. Save up some $ little by little, while you decide what exactly you want to modify. You might realize you want better camping gear before you...

    North Texas checking in

Hi there from Arlington! One of my next "Big" trips is out to Gila National Forest and surrounding area. I'm hoping next summer, as this coming summer is booked up. Have fun and post a write up on here when you get the chance.

    "Off the Grid" Fall 2017

I like the idea of putting something together in or close to Texas. With lack of public land, I'd have to find someone with private land who wouldn't mind 100 or so rigs and campers. Barnwell Mountain in Gilmer, TX is my first thought... but it's not exactly "off the grid".
