I am looking for info on the Fortune Creek Trail up to Gallagher head Lake

Has anyone been up Gallagher Head Lake/Fortune Creek yet this season (2019). I’m wondering if the snow has all melted yet & what’s the current trail condition?

    Krazy Beaver Super Shovel

Here are some more reasonably priced alternatives. I think the manufacturer is the same though. They are a little bit longer, which I like. Seymour Midwest Structron Round Point Shovel $60 Round Point Shovel (Part#49632GR), Handle Type D-Grip, Handle Material Fiberglass, Handle Length 40"...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

One fun thing on the Bolt lock was that the cable end that accepts the lock fits through the little circular holes in the boards & then the lock head can go on the outside. It worked real slick on my Mom’s truck.

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

Personally, I like the bike cables as I want a combo lock, not a key. A key is just something to lose. That said, I used one of those Bolt cable locks for my Mom’s recovery boards-worked great & able to be keyed to the ignition key (which you aren’t going to loose). A little pricey but I got an...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

Those 2nd ones looked cool. I didn’t realize they were a different material. Get them & let us know. They look like a good choice.

    Land anchors

No doubt, the Pull Pal has been around for a long time & does the job - it’s just expensive & bulky (difficult to store). The Deadman anchor is much easier to store but not really any kind of deal. Alot has to do with your probability of needing it. If you’re in the desert most of the time, tend...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

No, stacking, handle comfort & aftermarket expensive mounting systems are where Maxtrax excels. X-Bull Stacked 8.25”(4) 4.25”(2) Unquestionably, you need Maxtrax if you need low profile. They are the best equipment for sure, it’s just a massive premium to pay. (I’ve already bought 4 pair of...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

For what it’s worth, I know somebody who runs 4 X-Bulls. He reports he’s broken them & he broke his original Maxtrax. Other than stacking height, he found the performance essentially the same, certainly close enough to not pay 3-4x the price for Maxtrax. BTW, I recently bought 2 pair for $55...

Both Boise & Bend were booming & getting unreasonable 20 years ago - oh, if only I could have afforded to invest in either place then - also missed an offer when PDX was just thinking about establishing “The Pearl”. Oh well....

    Is this one of us?

Honestly all good points & it is disappointing that A-Aron hasn’t followed through. As for making mistakes, everyone makes them. I’ve been doing this for decades and it’s the more supportive, collegial approach to newcomers that I appreciate the most in this new “Overlanding Explosion”. The...

    Camping with kids

Ha Ha! I used to say they’d look at a 6’ drop onto concrete & my 1st born daughter would say “Watchout, you could fall” & her younger brother would look at it and think “Hmm, I wonder what that feels like?”

    Camping with kids

To be fair, watching my boy was like the line I heard from a comedian, “Being the Dad to a 3 year old boy is like being on secret service detail for a suicidal President”. My son had no sense of self preservation, definitely a “Curiosity killed the cat” situation.

What piece of gear made the biggest improvement to your experience?

I was shocked at the >$6K price too but it does seem to work well for 2. If you want to see one in action watch venture4wd on YouTube.

    Camping with kids

Agree 100% - that’s all great advice. I sometimes make trash cleanup a competition between them. With the education to avoid live rounds, I set a bounty on used cartridges (not going to work with a 3yo). It’s amazing how many shells they’ll pick up, even at a penny a shell. I find that even at...

Want to watch random videos about my rig/trips/etc?

Yep, there are lots of fancy supplies out there but lots of gloves, 4x4s & pressure go a long way. I’ve been meaning to break my kit into 2, a quick response one like you suggest & then a smaller one with things like suture, hemostats, drivers & lidocaine as their actual need may be never. Keep...
