How do you carry your recovery boards?

I would consider some inexpensive cam straps (Home Depot has a decent set of four 6’ ones for $9) - even just one. They are more reliable & nearly as easy to use. Bungees go bad with time & exposure. Even my heavy duty rubber bungee that held my shovel to my recovery boards gave up the ghost on...

US Comms - An Introduction to your Communication Options

Ditto. The answer is probably Ham>GMRS>CB but actual use/adoption is often the other way around for a multitude of reasons.

Hi-Lift: How many people NOT running them?

Good to hear! I’ve owned one for 16 years but never used it - primarily because I find it’s packed size a huge PITA to pack in a small-mid sized SUV. I’ve been thinking about making a small deck where I could slide it, my privacy tent & my Tiregater underneath everything.

Hi-Lift: How many people NOT running them?

I sure wish there was a decent set of folding off-road chocks. There used to be one manufacturer but that was discontinued about a decade ago.

    New Midland MXT275 (GMRS Mobile)

I would prefer to not drill through my sheet metal, would these other options work? A) Ditch light mount attached to a hood hinge? B) Metal clamp onto a steel full length expedition roof rack? C) Direct drill through mount to a steel full front bumper? Thanks!

    New Midland MXT275 (GMRS Mobile)

How long have you had the UV50X2? Clearly it’s a good sign for the UV50X1 that you have liked the preceding Ham unit. Continuing just a little off-topic, I take it you choose the UV50X2 over the UV-25X4? I imagine Max power is one reason but I’m looking at interior logistics issues & the...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

All the ones that look like the X-Bull are essentially identical. I’ve seen at least a dozen sets with a variety of names. All the ones that looked like X-Bull were the same. Same factory in China I bet.

    New Midland MXT275 (GMRS Mobile)

Sorry, I should have been more clear, I think he meant that it could scan the Ham frequencies outside the GMRS bands. It doesn’t transmit on these frequencies but can pick up info from them - making it a usefull kind of “all band” scanner. I’ll look at the Scanner App as it will be useful in...

    New Midland MXT275 (GMRS Mobile)

I know BaoFeng has a bad rep amongst experienced Ham operators but I would like to pose this question. I was all set to buy a MXT275 when a guy I know who is a full time Overlander notes that they don’t scan and they can’t accommodate split tone repeaters. He uses a BTech Mini UV-25X4 purely for...

    Gear security???

All great ideas. For what it’s worth, theft is even more rampant in 3rd world countries. Also, intimidation of fear of consequences doesn’t really work well for the junkies & local bad apples who patrol trailheads. The game camera is an interesting idea but, as an illustration, when my car was...

    Gear security???

+1 on all those locks. I use & advocate for them as well. The Bolt ones are pricey but keying to the ignition key is SUPER handy. Your setup does look official. In the 90s I was with a Geologist & her USGS set ups looked VERY similar to yours. Door magnets are brilliant & I like the idea of...

    X-Bull Recovery Tracks...another inexpensive alternative

To be fair, I’m not entirely sure the association isn’t the other way around. Experience often devalues brand recognition in favor of value & function. Just saying, it’s definitely not clear.

    Gear security???

I’ve used “bicycle” cables with combos or looped ends & combo locks. I like combos because there’s no key to lose & I can give someone else the number & they can access it without me. Generally I’m not looking for hardened security but simply a “keeping honest people honest” approach.

Guy broke his truck trying to recover me

Virtually all of the above true, some glorious & beautiful, others sad but true. I won’t change my general approach but might tweak it a bit based on what was said above. I like the “I hook my side, you hook yours” but I would caution one to double check their placement. Poor anchoring in a...
