I think you do your research and make purchases based on how you want to explore. Buy used if you can, upgrade, safety and security items. I think it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the gear, make a list of wants vs. need, then start to assemble your kit. Go easy, find locals in your area...
All great comments, the best is a dog! Warm, friendly, never alone, and will deter so many folks. If my dog doesn’t like you, I doubt I will either. The key fob alarm with a louder horn, cheap and may cause folks or animal to flee…
I’d say get a good truck battery, run it off that, incorporating solar will help for multi day use, but always have a small portable jump box, just good insurance everyday.. good luck, see you in the woods…
Great post! I think it encourages folks to think in advance before they go, just what is our / my safety and security plan. The single most important factors are common sense and good judgement, if something doesn't seem right, it problem isn't. Listen to yourself, head up, situational...

Outstanding Thread! Great graphics, makes wiring your rig much easier. The key is fuses and wire, aftermarket wiring is the cause of many vehicle fires. If in doubt go bigger, and every rig should have at a minimum, one fire extinguisher, Thank you for your diligence and the research!
I would like to test them out, I'm leaning towards the KG-1000, but I think for the average person, the Midland is a great choice. As a ham, I have added a GRMS radio to my rig to comply with FCC regulations.
I understand that Midland has some new models getting ready to be released.
Sadly, many are not good ambassadors of the outdoors. Leave no trace (lack of it) is present in every outing I do. Trash, getting off established trails, toilet paper. If everyone in this group committed to bringing out one more bag of trash then you took in, man what a difference.
