2005 Jeep LJ - The Heep

Lights! I struggled with the under hood light. 9 times out of 10 to make it work took a whack from a screwdriver. I cleaned it up and got rid of a bunch of corrosion, but I think the gravity switch was flaking out. Since I'm waiting for a fuel pump anyway... :unamused: I went with some KC...

2005 Jeep LJ - The Heep

Fuel I was... Bemoaning (bitching about?) the fuel capacity of the LJ a little earlier above and used it as justification for changing my bumper and hauling Jerry cans. Great. Lovely. But who wants to stop all the time to dump Jerry cans in? Maybe that's a first world problem, but I still...

2005 Jeep LJ - The Heep

So, funny story/pain in the a$$. After the Jeep regear break in was complete I took it to a local 4wd shop for an inspection on the gears. I figured that a different shop would objectively look at the install and give it the all clear... Turns out that they didn't give it the all clear. They...

    Ice road trip 2018

Like a lot of my fellow Albertans, I have worked in Fort McMurray, AB. When I was up there for a brief stint I would hear of “The bridge to nowhere” and the sand roads that are only driveable in the winter. Ever since I heard the stories I’d always wanted to see more of the remote area and...

Keeping gear warm in sub zero camping?

We have our cold bursts. This week in Fort Chipewyan the forecast said it was around -31°F..: I’m really hoping we don’t see that this week. It should be closer to 14°F during the day and a low of -4°F. It’s going to be... brisk. But we’ll survive. If you don’t hear back, send a dog sled to...

Keeping gear warm in sub zero camping?

I have a trip this week planned and we were having just this debate last night. Planned route: Stuff is gonna freeze. My plan is to have a cold cooler and a “warm” cooler. The small “warm” cooler I’ll keep in the back seat with fresh vegetables/fruit, a few bottles of water etc. Things I...

    Strangest Camping Encounters

That’ll wake a person up for sure. I was camped in the middle of nowhere one time sleeping in the canopy of my truck with a group of friends when someone (not part of our group) showed up at 2am. They wanted to be camped close to the top of the falls where we were so they pitched their tent...

    Jeep LJ Build

Very nice. I like the contrast is colour as well. What snorkel is on your Jeep? I’ve been looking for a half decent deal for a snorkel on mine. And I just realized you’re in Alberta! What part?

    Broken frame bolt.?

Not too bad. Several inches of space between explosive gasses and red hot metal add to the excitement. One could use a fire blanket placed against the tank if you can wedge it in and not touch the bolt.

Guaranteed or your money back. [emoji16]

    Broken frame bolt.?

Find a nut where the inner diameter is about the same size as the remaining bolt. Weld nut to bolt by filling the nut with weld. After it all cools off try to remove it with a wrench. The heat of the weld should loosen any corrosion when it cools. If you can spray some penetrating fluid...

    Mud flaps

Heh heh. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. I’ve heard of enforcement in only a few instances. One was this guy: I suspect the cops had tagged him as a favourite. Lol I don’t run mud flaps on my Jeep and haven’t been bugged yet.

    Mud flaps

In most of Canada it’s provincial law to have mud flaps, but the law varies by province. Around here you’ll see some remove-able flaps so that when you’re off road you’re not running over them if you have to back up. I just tied mine back after I tore them off a few times. Lol. Alberta Mud...
