    Costa Rica tips

We entered CR in the dry season, what it is now, and ended up parking our van and flying back to the States for a couple months. We returned in the wet season and found it much more to our liking. Obviously during the wet season anytime being off pavement can become very sticky. Routes wise...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

At Expo East 2019 we ruffled quite a few feathers when we were answering a question during a panel discussion. I guess we said the quiet part out loud. The question was multifaceted but it came down to the difficulty and expertise required to drive the Americas. Our answer was "all we did was...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

We kept running into a Dragoman Overland tour in Peru. A quick glance at their fleet and one will see they just use a school bus for their North/Central American tours.

    South Utah Dispersed Camping

The hike to Peek-a-boo and Spooky slot canyons is quite nice. We spent two nights out in the area and the tourists clear out by late afternoon. The side by sides really do a number on the roads but Grand Escalante isn't as crazy as Arches and Moab. There are also lots of petroglyphs and...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

A couple we met on the road, we've become very close friends, showed us photos of the locals in Kazakhstan driving the remote regions in Priuses (Priui... whatever the plural form is). They said it was crazy seeing them fording rivers in them and bouncing along the rough dirt tracks, the...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

Any travel over land is overlanding, doesn't even need to be by vehicle. Originally, the term overlanding was said to have been used to describe large cattle drives across Australia...I'm having difficulty remembering the etymology source. Many years ago the term was adopted by vehicle dependent...

    Off-road alone.

By your description it appears you are living a mix of RV/vanlife and overlanding. From our experience, RV/vanlife tends to be a bit more stationary which can cause stagnation, loneliness, or a feeling of wasted life for some. You have received very good advice and getting a dog could help...

Looking at doing our first month long trip..

Another vote for slowing down and planning less. When we were on the road we would put POIs in Maps.Me and pick one to start to head towards. Our plans were so open ended we changed them on the fly, sometimes taking days to reach the first point. For us, that removed the stress of having to...

Compressing large photos to be able to upload??

You're welcome. I've been doing it that way for our blog for years. You can also enhance or fix brightness, balance, color etc and manually crop the images in Photos...basic image processing. Another export option if you prefer image quality over size is to set Maximum as JPEG Quality then...

Compressing large photos to be able to upload??

You can use Preview on a Mac but RAW images usually open in Photos. You can export a single or a batch of images out of Photos at a reduced quality and as a jpg. As an example, I opened an image and selected File/Export 1 Photo. On the Export prompt I made sure it is set to JPEG as Photo Kind...

Overland Bound Forum - Why it is important to use the forum rather than decentralised chats.

I agree 100% but we are a dying breed. Eventually, people will just ask A.I. and they will do exactly what it tells them to. I remember the days when online repositories were downloadable to be utilized offline, Wiki's too. My favorite development forums were downloadable and so was Wikipedia...

    Electric overlanding

It's way off. Just watch the Long Way Up. They struggled with electric motorcycles and Rivians WITH corporate support. Anyone with a keen eye will notice the diesel truck hauling the generator with them. Unfortunately the series became about the struggles of trying to run electric vehicles over...
