2002 International Utility Vehicle - Talk me out of it

Personally, there is no point in having a full standing height habitation that forces you outside to complete basic chores. The trade off for being that large is to have a decent inside and livable space, one that can suit all seasons.

Too good to leave at home....

Just depends on the style of overlanding. We ran into some Swiss friends at a free remote beach camp in a Mexican NP, tucked in between palm trees with the gulf a few yards away. They really wanted to use their "cooker". The husband asked me to help him retrieve it from his mini-class C that was...

We are driving around the world. Right now.

Our absolute least favorite days were the vehicle retrieval process. Congrats on extracting your rig and starting S.A., it's much different than C.A.

Full-time overlanding - to tow or not to tow

This thread is old but we wanted to add our experience. After 7 years of fulltime overlanding, 4 were from Alaska to Argentina, we can say...there is no perfect rig. There will always be concessions so the most important thing is to choose the smallest rig you are comfortable living in and the...

    Overlanding and kayaking

No worries, we've encroached on their territory so it's mostly safe now. I've kayaked that location without issue, then again, maybe I don't have a purdy mouth.

    FOR SALE SOLD

If you haven't listed it there already, the Pan-American Travelers Association FB group would give you much more traffic.

    Overland Vehicle Mileage

When we bought our van in 2014 it had 193k miles on it, today it's just under 296k and it's our only vehicle.

Battery management with shore power and solar?

We also use a Blue Smart IP65. In our opinion it's more useful since we can also use it for any battery such as the van's etc.

Our forest sites went to Reserve America and so far it is fantastic...minus the fee for what used to be free.

Free to paid is never a good move in the long term. Also, for those of us that don't schedule everything out it sucks when more things move to reservation only. Even if they had to add a fee, first come first served is what we prefer. We've spoken to many camp hosts at Forest CGs and asked why...

    Nibbling Away at Your Freedoms

It's called incrementalism and it has been applied to everything.

    Paid Guided Trips?

Even when we did hook-up with another rig we had a rule that we didn't need to be stuck together. We would hash out the ending point and plan to meet there. Of course there were times we ended up traveling together due to rough terrain, if there were technical sections, and motorcycles liked to...

    Paid Guided Trips?

In 2015 we rented a Honda CRV, there were four of us and the 4Runner was already rented, to drive to the Caracol Ruins in Belize. We left early to join the military convoy, what we were supposed to do, but they had already left by the time we reached the check-point. The guards told us to go...

    Overlanding and kayaking

Kayaks are one of the things we wished we took during all our years on the road. Many have inflatable kayaks/SUPs, we'll definitely work something in to our rig as we transition it to non-fulltime.

    Paid Guided Trips?

In Costa Rica the overland vehicle rental companies tell their customers to install and use iOverlander, everyone renting vans in Chile were using it too. If we decided to rent in another country for a vacation our plan would be the same. We'd also have our rough route hashed out and plotted...

    Pan American Highway

Congrats, we took 4 years to drive the Americas. We'd be more than happy to answer any specific questions you may have or to point you to someone we know. Personally, we wouldn't caravan the entire way but more of hooking up with road friends to run certain sections together. There are lots of...

No cooler, No refrigerator meal ideas?

Eggs last a long time, even if they were previously refrigerated. Freeze meat then either put it in a small cooler or a simple cooler bag and wrap it with your blankets. Most condiments are fine to not refrigerate, many never need refrigeration even if it is stated on the bottle (vinegar and...

    Beginner questions!!

Less is more, in all things. If budget is not a limitation then I think you'll have a lot of fun building out a trailer and taking it on trips. If budget is an option, and you have a GF, then I'd focus on the most important creature comforts to get you (or both of you) out there. If you don't...

    Overland is amazing life style!!

We spent 6 months in Colombia during our drive south and visited many places. We also liked Barichara (and El Cocuy) but we ended up spending a couple months in Villa de Leyva so it became our favorite place, we actually drove back to VDL after extending our tourist and vehicle permits in...

    Overland is amazing life style!!

Welcome. Colombia is a great country and Colombians are the nicest people on the planet. By far, it is our favorite Latin American country and Villa de Leyva will forever be within our hearts. We did miss out on Cano Cristales but that makes a great excuse to drive through again someday.
