Question: what to do if broken down and no cell service?

Unfortunately not where I live and not where we'll be travelling all next year : (

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 120 as an overland vehicle?

    - are these vehicles as reliable as Toyota Land Cruisers are made out to be? Short answer – yes; however note that Land Cruisers are not as reliable as myth has them; age and mileage is key to any vehicle. Of the vehicles we’ve owned (Pajero, 4Runner, Geländewagen, Patrol, Cherokee, X Trail...

Long Term Overland Set Up Questions

I suspect that we have a very different mode of travel, however our current mode of travel is in a Mk IV Montero, with a bed set up in the back, storage, and a refrigerator. For our last trip we didn't take this (shipping costs were astronomical) so bought a Wrangler in the destination country...

    24’ Tacoma Tire Suggestions

Of the tyres we've used in the last 15 years, the Yokohamas were the best until we were recommended Toyos. We had used BFGs in Africa and they were very good but a little more noisy on the highway and when we went to Australia we had Geolandars all round . One was destroyed; the next tyre shop...

    24’ Tacoma Tire Suggestions

WRT to the tyres, we have used the Geolandars and now prefer the Toyos (and have experience with Dunlops, Michelins, BFGs, Pirellis, and Bridgestones. In terms of the size, the clearance benefit is only half an inch so I'd pick based on whether you plan to air down/up much (or more accurately...

Entering Europe with foreign registered vehicle

I've shipped vehicles into Europe a couple of times, however on both occasions imported them (in the sense of registering them locally) so no personal experience, however I am fairly sure that you can get a TIP in most countries. Try looking at national customs websites to gain clarity.

Entering Europe with foreign registered vehicle

Good advice from El-Dracho. Two more thoughts: 1) Be aware that to travel in some countries in Europe you'll need a vignette (which is a permit to use the roads) - Austria, Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Switzerland (that's all of them I think). You can buy them...

US Citizen purchasing motorcycle in the UK or Europe

Excellent! We're in Bogotá however travel through Pereira often, having family in Manizales (as well as other places in Colombia).

Build ideas/suggestions for my 2023 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X

Good advice. With the money some people spend on modifications before getting out and about you could drive to Patagonia! re RTTs - we've used one only once - 5 weeks in Iceland on a rental 4x4. The cost of shipping our own vehicle would have been ridiculous so rental was the best option. It...

US Citizen purchasing motorcycle in the UK or Europe

It used to be possible to buy vehicles, and perhaps bikes, in a number of countries on an export plate - a friend of mine bought a Saab in Sweden, and my father bought a Standard (now you know how long ago this was) in Germany. Worth checking with European bike manufacturers to see whether this...

Books that Inspired You to Get into Overlanding

Yes - simply an atlas (not a road atlas, just an atlas).

New to truck and overloading....ready to get started!

Echo this. You'll find a thousand views on the forum. My offer - keep it simple; don't assume that you need something until know why. With a vehicle, appropriate tyres, a tent (ground or RTT) or a bed in the back, you could drive to Patagonia with little problem (I've seen a Canadian Windstar in...

    Overlanding Survey

Welcome - I hope you get some value from the survey. I started completing it but gave up at Q3 - "How long is your average overlanding trip?" when the options were inadequate. Our trips average 10 months.

    Advice for trip to tuktoyatuk

We would take 74 days to do this, which I mention simply to share that it depends on your travel style. If going efficiently (and safely) you could reach Dawson City from Mason City in five days (as The Deputy says), however this leaves no room for any issues, so I'd guess six days. Hence 12...

    Camp coffee!

Brewing methods - at home we have an espresso machine, alternatively use a french press or filter. On the road, as noted. Blends - none - we prefer single source beans: Ethiopian, Kona, Blue Mountain, Luwak, or several Colombian beans: Guayabal and Hacienda La Mesa being at the top of the list.

    Air-down trailer as well?

Most of the answers discuss airing down for uneven surfaces/rocky trails. Point 3 here is also important - if you're in deep soft sand then there's no point in airing down your tow vehicle if you don't air down the trailer, otherwise you're towing a plough.

    2016 LC200 Series suspension question

Your vehicle is capable of going from Texas to Argentina with no modifications, so you could simply go with OEM kit and standard specification. We had an OME lift on our LC80 in Africa, and it was handy to have a little more clearance than most of the other LCs, just to have fewer dings on the...

Looking for Guidance on Where to Start!

Welcome! As others note, it depends on your focus, if you're planning to drive to Argentina, then your focus (and the forum areas) will be different from that if you plan to go rock-crawling locally.

Phone applications which record GPX tracks, which can then be exported?

Thank you. I have Gaia on the phone - I guess I need to find out how to use it... : ) On space, it's not much, as you say, however we need to get down to no more than 13 Kg for 12 months, so every little helps...
