  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

Regular checks of places in the rig that are not easily visible or reachable

Absolutely ! Even the slightest rattle must be tracked down and fixed. I’m a big user of the clear reinforced rubber tubing anywhere wiring passes through or even near any solid objects. I also use a lot of 1/4” dimpled rubber sheeting under and along side of things.

Sometimes I think we've gone too far.

No drone, no skottle, never. We do have a first gen trasharoo

Sometimes I think we've gone too far.

yea, this will be our first trip up off the ground. Having a mattress beneath us and in our bags should be more comfortable than on the ground or on the cots.

Sometimes I think we've gone too far.

Don’t care what anyone else thinks, just asking for personal thoughts on what works for everyone and if anyone else draws lines in the sand that constantly move..

Sometimes I think we've gone too far.

OK, we have dual batteries, 220 watts of solar, a fridge, a dedicated freezer, running water, rear deck kitchen with drawers, tupperware tub, and an old Coleman stove, hot shower, RTT on trailer, plenty of room for food, gas and water to disappear for 400 miles or 5 days, (whichever comes...

Paper maps? still a thing or no?

We carry an old Silva compass and it works very well after a couple of decades. We carry paper maps, Nat Geo, Purple Lizard, Latitude 40, and a few BLM Topo maps. As one might conclude, we have a lot of maps. When we head out we take only the maps of the region we are headed to. This time out...

    Super Simple Dual Battery Project

Babble, ramble, excessive tangent taker; about the time I gather my thoughts they all want to run away again.

    Super Simple Dual Battery Project

That is the best explanation I’ve read concerning how a dc to dc charging system works.

    Ecco obd2 Effuel ?

I just read about yet another chip that claims to save 15% in MPG or more. Add horsepower and torque. Just plug it in to your obd port and go. Scam or not? Remember the Tornado? Big scam. I’m thinking this is too. Anyone tried it?

How heavy is your overlanding JKU?

Good grief, I’m constantly upgrading all the little things to lose weight. I’m feeling poopy cause I’m just a hair under my GVRW. I do have spring rates that have increased my capacity ( legal in Australia ) to just over 7,000 lbs. I’m 150 lbs less than that but I’d still like to get more...

Do you really need heated seats and remote start?

True, that’s exactly what it does. In the 18 I used to drive and have since retired from, I hated that feature. I’d be coming down the northway, full load at 65 mph, and just as it’s time to pass a slow vehicle or pull a long grade, it’ll slow you down and take all your momentum away. Timing...

    Utah trip

These are by far the best maps for the region. Moab East & Moab West. Lots of details, and easy to read. What vehicle do you drive? Day trips? Camping? hotels at night? It’s all up to you and these maps will not steer you wrong. Trail and Road access on public lands - Latitude 40° maps...

    fridge power

Hmm, not offended at all. You said dual battery set ups just to power a fridge are dumb. ( I’ve a fridge, a dedicated freezer, a water pump and charge up my camera batteries.) It could be considered overkill for just one little fridge. Then you state that starter batteries are not meant to...

    Trailer pros and cons...opinions??

I’ll add that if the hitch is too high that trailer’ll swing right around and smack you upside the head. That’s a big truck you’re using at 3,000 lbs of tongue weight. I’m currently at 200lbs of tongue weight with a 1300 lb trailer. Well within the rule of thumb, 10-15% . I recently rebuilt...

    Trailer pros and cons...opinions??

Absolutely! My extended family is learning about this. As much as we may desire a campfire on the high deserts, it makes little sense to be dragging firewood 3,000 miles or so, just for a little ambience let alone the environmental impact. Not only insects, but imagine what the northwest...

water tank? Anyone using a rather large water tank on their DIY built trailer?

I run a pair of these inside the trailer. I’ve a build write up in the diy trailer forums here at OB https://www.frontrunneroutfitters.com/en/us/water-solutions/front-runner-upright-water-tank-flat.html

    Keeping it simple (and reliable)

yup,, I have a 1990 Ford Ranger for my daily driver. That thing is a blast to tool around in. My dream pick up would be a 64 f series 4x4.

Midland micromobile GMRS radios-is the 40 watt version worth it?

many years ago my father in law was complaining about taxes. "Why should I be paying taxes for something that doesn't benefit me" says he. I must back track a bit. My father-in-law has a 38ft ketch. Back in the early 90s they took a five year tour. Their first trip was up and around the...

    Keeping it simple (and reliable)

ya, I carry a medium sized Viar compressor, @ 10lbs. Thats all one really needs for what we do. The weekend warriors? I could see using c02 for that. After wheelin till late in the day, one wants to air up quickly so they can drive back home.

    Keeping it simple (and reliable)

OK- this is getting really weird, or is it just a cruzer thing? Over the years I too am anal retentive about preventative maintenance. I just automatically do things like pulling the head every 125k or so. I don't know about twenty more years as we do put roughly 10,000 miles on per year...
