    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

I agree with you there 100%, our daughter runs a lab, big-time student debt, and making a very nice living. Professional and/or skilled labor is always and should be, highly compensated for in our system. I'm comparing the old school, unskilled laborer that used to work on production lines. Or...

That is a truism. Progress? we don't know that answer for another 100 years. History's dance is mostly 3 steps forward 2 steps back. Hopefully in our lifetimes we can get the rest of the industrialized world on board. We still have plenty of jobs, we just need to pay our services workers the...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

If regulations did not exist, we'd all be living in ramshackle houses, with faulty electricity and bad plumbing set upon poor foundations. Our national infrastructure would not have lasted nearly a hundred years. Some regulations are good, it's a matter of perspective or world view. I see you...

Rebuilding my " Carry-On" TSC Trailer

I was using the same size tires on the original build. (285/75/16) I may go to a larger diameter tire in the future, (255/85/16) but thats all the larger I'll ever go. I've never cared for the idea of lift blocks, they are just one more thing taking any build away from the KISS methodology...

Are U.S.A and Canada really the mecca of the overland?

Interesting question. I consider Australia to be the Mecca of Overlanding, but I do live in the USA’s northeast seaboard. In order to do any driving off pavement or very far off the beaten path one must either go north and into Canada, ( about 400 miles to the border) or head across The...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Interesting,, I just don’t fit the mold, I’m kinda of a greenie, but very pragmatic about it as I think it’s important to leave a small footprint. “Leave no Trace” and “Tread Lightly” ethics are not only for the back country but also a way of life. We have these giant trash containers that get...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Oh, that won’t happen, I can’t say the cruiser will never be sold, but I don’t foresee it being for sale for at least another 10 years.. I can’t see purchasing an EV for back country touring, at least not until they can be recharged by simply sitting in the sun. That may or may not happen in...

Don’t have one, yet. Electric will be next replacing our daily driver. You got my point though. For every advancement in technology there are always nay sayers and the nay sayers, in general, are wrong. Nay sayers abounded for Fulton, the Write Brothers, Edison, Jobs, Gates, Tesla etc etc...

You keep talking about hybrids and or electrics being useful only for city folks. A couple of winters ago, in the middle of Wyoming a Tesla blew by us. That got my attention. Tesla vehicles have a greater range than my vehicle, and most other overland vehicles by far, and there are charging...

Wow, you say everything you have to say as if you do indeed,, just wow- a simple google search provided me with almost the direct opposite facts. It’s like, wow, you state your non researched socio/political opinions as if anyone could take you seriously. Why do you post up your unwanted...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Well sure, but the surcharge for fuel wasn’t all that much. A buddy of mine sold wood pellet at right around 200 a ton.. the fuel spiked up, a surcharge was added. If my budddy had passed that excess cost directly to the customer it would have been less than 10 dollars a ton. Unfortunately he...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Very true.. diesel prices will always be as much as what the transportation industry is willing to pay for energy. They don’t start squeaking until around $5 a gallon. I distinctly remember back in what, 2006 or 2007, paying just about $5.60 a gallon. The trucks and trains kept right on rolling

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Actually, no, it’s not anything like comparing or complaining about life threatening diseases. Our fuel is currently cheap, it’s been cheap, and probably always will be cheap when compared to a percentage of our average income or to what the rest of the developed world pays for fuel...

    Higher Fuel Prices And Overlanding

Good subject, back in 2005 we were paying well over $4.00 a gallon. In Canada it was over $1.20 a liter. In the mid 2000s it spiked up to nearly $5.00 a gallon. In 2009/10 gasoline was averaging $4.50 a gallon. Our Jeep got 10-11 mpg, then our LC got and still gets 12-13 mpg. Those high fuel...

In over my head, so I thought I'd reach out for help

Ok, I hope the OP is still around. You had an early 90s Landcruiser, so I’m assuming you know what their capabilities are and their limitations. You also must understand that the Toyota 70 and 80 series trucks are renowned world wide for complete reliability their off road prowess & their...

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

You got that backwards. 4wheelin was born of overlanding . People have been traveling by land, on machines since the invention of the motorized vehicle. Short or long distance? It didn’t matter. But, somewhere on those overlanding trips, they had to do some “wheelin” to get from point a to...

Electric Winch. Are they necessary for overlanding/touring?

I was pulling lambs at 10 and strong enough by 12 to pull calves. I only remember having to use a come along once. Actually you do a lot of pushing and moving limbs into correct placement before the push/pull. Breach is a whole different animal.

    MOUNTING TOUGH STUFF ALPHA

I just mounted a Tepui tent on my frontrunner rack. I made the mistake of ordering the short frontrunner RTT brackets. No need for them, so I just use them for extra support. If on the other hand you want some space between the tent floor and the top edge of the rack then order the tall brackets.

Rebuilding my " Carry-On" TSC Trailer

Yes, if you’re not using a rack, 57” is way too long to fit a 3 man tent. My son in law did his trailer in much the same way, except, no rack. His uprights are just in front of and just behind his fenders. We wanted easy access to the stowage areas and the ability to dial in our tongue...
