Our, And Your, Opinions On Some Popular Overlanding Gear

Ah yea, we have a wok we use at home on our gas stove. If I put legs on it and a propane burner beneath it, it would still be a wok. It’s kinda like Kleenex tissues, they are, after all, nose wipes. LOL

Our, And Your, Opinions On Some Popular Overlanding Gear

I'll begin with the Skottle. I agree! It is bulky, difficult to even think about packing, and then, even if you do reorganize your packing system it is a steel disk, designed to cut into hard packed soil. How long till that disk cuts through anything that is near it. Cripes, our cast iron...

    AGM Batteries (NorthStar Bought out?)

One thing I learned the hard way, ( my first pair of agms lasted only 4 years ) is to at least once a month charge them up fully with an appropriate charger. Since AGMs require 14.6 - 14.8 volts the alternator in our vehicles is not capable of bringing them up to a full charge. Since our...

    AGM Batteries (NorthStar Bought out?)

Yes, they do make their own batteries under the Enersys umbrella. Your initial statement that Northstar was one of three companies making automotive/marine batteries for the retail market, is what threw me. Enersys headquarters and East Penn Manufacturing are located in my county. I have...

    AGM Batteries (NorthStar Bought out?)

Odyssey batteries have been made since 1995. They came to market a year later. EnerSys purchased Odyssey in the early 2000s. I wouldn’t hesitate replacing any battery with an Odyysey. What game are you referring to? As I understand it, EnerSys purchased Odyysey to get into the retail market...

Installing and powering a fridge in vehicle

Ouch, our ARB and our ENGLE are just fine at a 30 degree tilt. Dometic says flat and level only? Just my un-informed opinion but the fridge should not be on an ignition circuit for a plethora of reasons.

Installing and powering a fridge in vehicle

To the OP, Mark, I highly recommend a dual battery system. For the price of a Jackery 500 you can get a 65 or 70ah AGM deep cycle battery, all the simplistic wiring and fuses, along with a 120 watt solar panel and cheapo controller. Add a solar set up to the jackery and your topping 700...

    New Overlander looking for advice

Hmmm, I take it then that Lifestyle Overland’s utube channel wouldn’t exactly be my cup of tea? Hmmmm, thought not. LOL

    New Overlander looking for advice

One thing I notice that new folks do is that they tend to create too much trash. My wife & I can be out and about for a week or more and come nowhere close to filling up our Trasharoo. Last trip out we had 5 adults & 2 teenagers. I had the unpleasant task of being the trash nazi. After the...

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

Once again, I’m pleased that I’ve opened this topic up. For me, stir the pot a bit, it’s the best way to learn. Admittedly I’m way old school with communication devices. I didn’t get a cell phone until flip phones were long gone. however, after reading your reactions I’m now convinced that the...

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

I’m quite pleased that I started a discussion on GMRS. I’m just a tad more savvy, thanks to input from members, with my understanding of radio waves and how they work. Interesting that every write up on GMRS Almost everywhere I’ve read, only discusses the positive attributes and very rarely the...

Ditch the CB entirely or stow it?

Keep it, people will be coming back to inexpensive and reliable CB's. My old Cobra 25 LTD, after a peak and tune would get out about 12 miles. Further on weird nights and chatterless channels. I need to find another cobra.

GMRS: "not impressed" or "we musta been doing something wrong"

On a recent trip the family used our brand new Midland GMRS hand held radios. 2 things I noticed that I didn't care for. When they say "line of sight" they mean it. As we were traversing around buttes, boulders, dipping into swales, washouts, and other natural occurrences, contact was...

Lost 5 more formerly awesome camping spots in Colorado...

The only part of OB’s mission statement I’ve always disagreed with is that adventure/overlanding is for everyone. There’s a lot of people that don’t deserve to be in the backcountry and there is no amount of education that will alter their entitled world view.

    ZR2 Bison

On a very recent trip we spent about 5 hours winching, high lifting, moving rocks, etc etc, to get a built Chevy ( 2.5” Lift etc etc, ) and a stock 4Runner Trail, up and through a section of tight Canyon just south of Chicken Corners on the Lockhart road. If the 4Runner Trail would have had...
