    Very John Steinbeck-ish!

Hey, like the rig! Just a couple questions if you don't mind. Did you mount the RTT on the factory roof rack? And, second, what tire size are you running there? Thanks!

    ZJ Owners Registry

I had one...1994, 5.2 Liter. In 2011 I sold it and got a 2006 WK. if I knew then what I know now....don't get me wrong, I am real happy with my WK, but it is seemingly harder to do things to it than the ZJ. Sent from my iPad using Overland Bound Talk

Roof top tent vs ground tent

RTTs seem interesting. I'm a tent guy now but if I were on a trip where I'm moving each day, an RTT could be beneficial. However I usually set up a base camp and then move out from that currently. I'd have to agree with some of the comments, a RTT on a trailer could be the best overall option...

    Best Starter Overland Rig?

In case you haven't seen it in your searches, TrailRecon on YouTube just started a build on a Jeep XJ. Here's the link: . Might be helpful for you as you move forward.

    Camping Tech

The best thing I've ever seen, though wasn't in the night sky. I set up my scope and was just looking at random things. When looking at a mountain peak about 3 or 4 miles away, I saw a buck on the top of it. Just a silhouette, mind you. Had a rather large rack and no doubt keeping an eye on his...

    Camping Tech

One of my hobbies is astronomy. I live in the SF Bay Area. There is a lot of light pollution around here, and not-too-great skies. When in remote areas with fantastically clear skies, I'd be missing the opportunity if I didn't take my scope! Sent from my iPad using Overland Bound Talk

    Camp Priorities

Depends on the time of arrival as there would be some slight changes, but, roughly: 1. Unpack/setup tent 2. Setup cot and toss in sleeping bag 3. Toss clothes and personal stuff into tent 4. Unpack kitchen (stove, utensils, spices, matches, pots/pans, cooler chest) 5. Go scavenge for firewood...

Water - How Much Do I Need while Overlanding?

Good article! You mention that you and Corrie need 20 gallons for a 5 day trip. When you look at the weight of that, it's a no brainer! For water weight and weight of containers, call it 180 - 190 pounds, or about the equivalent of carrying an extra person. That in the overall scheme isn't...

    Overland Vehicle 2.0

An interesting concept, really. Take a look at the lunar rovers. Totally electric, a motor at each wheel. And with no power loss due to transmissions, transfer cases and differentials could be interesting. Obviously need to increase speed and range capability, though.

Just had to set up my iPad...

I saw something in the documentation about that issue, but I don't know what it says as I didn't read it yet. Curious to see how well it works.

Just had to set up my iPad...

So the iPad was giving me some issues recently -- crashes, hang ups, etc -- so it was time to do a restore to it. Now it looks good onscreen, and added a new-to-me app called Topo Maps. For $8 seems to be really good, and Topo downloads are free from USGS, too! Nice! After I get some...

    Animal Encounters

A couple of encounters I have experienced over the years. First I recall was bears messing around camp in the garbage cans. That was back in the '70's. The unimproved campground had trash cans, the old kind as in non-bear proof. So around 10 at night you'd hear the cans getting knocked around...

    Roof rack for JKU

I've been researching roof racks for me and in the process came across this YT video for the Smittybilt Defender rack: . Maybe this is an option for you. Looks pretty well built and rather simple and non-intrusive install.

Do you NEED Lockers for Overlanding?

That would be great! With enough notice I could make it. Any idea roughly when and where?

Do you NEED Lockers for Overlanding?

Great article, Michael! And especially enjoy the technical aspects of a drivetrain. Driving a Jeep GC with QuadraDrive II, I just flip a little lever and the computer decides whether to lock or not for me. As a novice, I like that, but I really like knowing what is happening! As for needing...
