Here's a screen shot of NM's current situation off the dashboard... I'll echo that I'm seeing state/tribal/local police pulling over vehicles with out of state plates, but I don't know if it's a policy or a coincidence. The 14day self-quarantine is "mandatory" and there is apparently...
Awesome information! A few thoughts:
50W vs 15W doesn't buy you too much - maybe a 1.2x transmit (only) range through ground clutter, but line of sight is usually the limitation and more power doesn't help there.
A good antenna, well installed and tuned will do more than 50W vs 15W -...
My take:
Midland makes a decent radio
Price is fair
Kit includes power adapter and mag-mount antenna (having the antenna outside the vehicle is a must for range)
MXTTB transmit power is 5W (low, but not necessarily a deal breaker with a good antenna)
MXTTB doesn't work with GMRS repeaters...
It depends on which maps and how many tiles. Some of the maps are *really* big. You can signficantly speed up the process by defining an area and downloading only your preferred base map over that, then defining your route and downloading the tiles for your preferred overlays for the route...
I have an OR, rear-locker, KDSS, crawl-control - very happy with it. Local Toyota dealership emails me once a month asking if I'd like to sell it. No way. I've posted before on KDSS, within limits it's a best of both worlds between sway-bar and no-sway-bar. Great stability on the road and very...
I picked up the ham license and rig as backup communication, because I frequently solo-explore places where a good cell signal might be many miles away. But found another reason over last summer: I was able to listen to the fire crews' chatter here and get some insight into what was happening...
I have both ham and GMRS rigs in my vehicle, but I *use* the ham.
greater range
better signal quality
much larger set of usable "channels"
more repeaters (10x more where I live)
more people listening on the repeaters
digital modes available
APRS position reporting, messaging, tracking, etc (map...
Amen, Mike. I saw your post AFTER I hit the "post" button on mine - your Elmer was wise.
Scrappy Wolf: apologies if my "long" was more than needed. Go back to Mike's post and save mine until later. Just know there are resources here to help when you need it.
Hi Scrappy Wolf,
TLDR: More transmit power is nice, but it's better to have a high quality antenna (2-3dBi gain for hill country, 5-6dBi gain in the flat lands) and to do a good job installing and matching it to your radio. The difference between antenna mount points is a compromise is only one...
Here's a weird suggestion: crawl under the rig regularly and look at where the combination of your driving and the rig configuration are creating fresh scrapes and scars under there. The difference between what you need for driving rocky 4wd trails vs what you need for rock-crawling is immense...
Wow! Just Wow!
This is *much* more thorough (and operationally useful!) than the trip plans I leave behind. Please continue to update this.
@Michael @Corrie is there any chance of adding a feature to the OB1 app to build and share a trip plan like what Tyler has described here? If one were...
I'm gonna guess that no one wants to hear that my mostly stock 4runner Off-Road averaged 22.9mpg over the last two tanks. 400-460 miles per tank is pretty typical. Nothing special, just letting it roll.
With everything I'm learning from you and the others here, sharing a little about radios seems like the least I can do. I'm just thankful for everyone contributing on the things they've learned - every little bit shared brings us all up a level.
The allowed frequencies (channels) and the transmit power limits for each of those frequencies are allocated to the FRS/GMRS radio service by the FCC. The frequencies and the max transmit power are set so as not to interfere with adjacent services. These are basically "baked into" the radio...
I don't know how the "involuntary quarantine" works. I have heard that the tribal police are enforcing very strictly and locking the gates, but I have no idea how hard the state police or state parks are pursuing this. With NM plates in the Nat'l Forests here, I haven't been stopped. It looks...
The problem is finding one 2 years old... I'm still getting weekly emails from my dealership asking if I would consider trading mine. Crazy. Never had a dealership asking to buy a vehicle back, but they have more buyers than used vehicles.
KDSS is similar to a disconnect, but being...
