    GMRS info request

A 50W version of the 275 would be neat, just be realistic about what the extra 35W *really* gets you: Line of sight will still be the primary limitation. You won't be able to transmit "through/over" high ground (or much past the curvature of the Earth) to a receiver on the other side. This is a...

    OB Approved Chain Saws

Great Thread! Just to stir the pot a little, during the dry seasons in New Mexico, the National Forest and State fire bans include most gas powered tools. Electric chainsaws are still permitted. The Stihl is a beast. But since I already have Milwaukee tools, several batteries, and two...

OB Approved Overland Safety: Fire Extinguishers

I carry two Element 50 fire extinguishers. They're a pretty amazing piece of technology. Each is about a foot long, about an inch in diameter, weighs ~9.6oz, and is estimated to pack the A-B-C-K fire suppression capability of 5 5lb bottle extinguishers. So 2 would supposedly be equivalent to...

    Do you carry bolt cutters?

Indeed. A timely thread, Monday evening I found myself behind a forest service gate which had just been locked by the fire crews working to suppress several small wildfires started by lightning strikes last weekend. No immediate danger. The crew unlocked the gate to let me back out with little...

    Do you carry bolt cutters?

But we all carry wrenches... take-away lesson: Do NOT trust these locks... (And before anyone asks, I work at a high security facility where we use alternatives for exactly this reason. Breaking a lock to enter where you don't belong is likely to be used as prima facie evidence that you...

    GMRS info request

I have one of the 275's too. It's a nice rig. It's small enough that it mounted on the back side of the console box of my 4Runner. I really like the controls/display on the mic - really easy to use.

What did you name your rig?

Well, I hear that there is but one punishment for setting alight the grail-shaped beacon...

SOLD SOLD- Midland MXT275 GMRS 15w Mobile Radio

I have one of these and love it. It installed slick and easy into the console storage of my 4runner. It's able to use the repeaters 45 miles away on Sandia Crest above Albuquerque. These are good little radios.

    Gaia Tablet Options

GaiaGPS does have three different "follow" modes, controlled by an icon at the top of the screen which takes on different appearances depending on the selected mode. Going from memory, a red circle with compass points freezes the map with North at the top of the screen and you'll need to move...

How do you get weather updates with no cell service?

I lived in Boulder, CO for several years, where they used something similar, except it was a heavy chain instead of a rope and it had a cinder block hanging at the bottom.

OB Approved US Comms - An Introduction to your communication options

Thank You! This is exactly the kind of information and opinion I need! I've spent the last two days reading the manuals for the Kenwood and Yaesu radios and Questions: If the Kenwood's TNC is attached to the tablet (data terminal to audio input jack on the tablet?), is there a decent tablet...

OB Approved US Comms - An Introduction to your communication options

And most of my motivation to have the ham is the poor cell network coverage in parts of New Mexico. Looking at New Mexico and the surrounding states, D-Star has a 5% share of the 2/70 repeaters and Fusion has a 4% share (New Mexico is lagging adoption). With adoption so low, neither seems...

OB Approved US Comms - An Introduction to your communication options

Well, speaking of cheap radios, guess what? Mine died today. The magic blue smoke escaped and it no longer turns on. Fortunately it happened while testing at home and not on the trail when it was needed. So, while I'm here, let's talk about a new radio. New Mexico's repeater system is...

OB Approved US Comms - An Introduction to your communication options

I have both ham and GMRS in my truck and I'm licensed for both. First, "dual-band" - this is a ham radio capable of transmitting and receiving on the 2m band (all the freqs between 144Mhz-148MHz) and the 70cm band (all the freqs between 420Mhz-450MHz). GMRS is different, with only ~2dozen...
