Backcountry Navigator TOPP GPS PRO seems very good? Anyone use this?

What does BCN Pro do better than GaiaGPS? Would it be worth buying an Andriod tablet just to run it? (all my other gear is iOS)

    HAM RADIO

A very good idea! A lot of the ham-based YouTube is more focused on gear reviews and technical problem-solving/opinions.

You might also look at the prices for "renewed" (refurbished) iPads - the ones I've bought have been as solid as brand new. If you're able to consider cost over expected lifetime, they've been on par with the Samsungs or better for me. YMMV.

    navigation systems

I have Waze (city nav), Google Maps (city nav backup), GaiaGPS (full - offroad nav. Gaia backup is a paper map) installed on both my phone and my tablet. The phone screen (~6-inch diag) is fine for city-nav with Waze or GMaps, but for offroad, I by far prefer the 8-inch tablet with GaiaGPS. I...

    HAM interference with fog lights?

A very good point on the ferrite chokes. If someone needs more detail on selection and use, the tutorial pages at Palomar Engineers are helpful: https://palomar-engineers.com/ferrite-chatter-noise https://palomar-engineers.com/ferrite-products/ferrite-cores/ferrite-mix-selection...

    HAM interference with fog lights?

Hi Louisiana Overland! I'm running VHF/UHF radios (ham and GMRS) in an '18 4Runner. Good news is that the vehicle platform is pretty EMI/RFI quiet. Also, I think your power wiring should be reasonably quiet - the block under the driver seat wouldn't be my first guess as a the source of the...

I see most people are using HAM instead of CB

I love Waze. BUT, living in rural New Mexico, I've found that both Waze and Google Maps will plot a route over roads that are restricted to high clearance vehicles and roads that are closed for 5 months per year for lack of winter maintenance. With a capable 4WD, that might be a feature, but we...

I see most people are using HAM instead of CB

FWIW: There's an AWESOME iPhone app to help you study for the ham radio exam. It's called "HamRadioExam" (Technician) by Roy Watson (he also has apps for the General and Extra exams). There's also a book I liked: Gordon West's 2018-2022 Technician Class FCC Element 2 Amateur Radio License...

    19 4Runner Storage/Sleeping System

That looks fantastic! I've been thinking of doing the same kind of set up for my '18 with two sets of the 60/40 section - one with and one without the seat bottoms removed. It looks like you've sealed the wood already. So, maybe wrap the upper surface pieces in a carpet that matches the dark...

I see most people are using HAM instead of CB

I suspect that enforcement is "light", because of the difficulty in remotely distinguishing the signal strength difference between a 50W modified ham rig transmitting on GMRS frequencies with a 2dBi gain antenna** from a 15W GMRS rig with a 6dBi gain antenna** when the line of sight is...

OB Approved 10 Tips For Sleeping Warm In Camp

One of my lighter bags is a semi with a cinch-able hood (like a mummy). Its rating isn't as low as my mummies, perhaps partly because my feet aren't together to warm each other and partly because there's just more volume inside the bag for my body to warm. BUT when the temperature is within the...

OB Approved 10 Tips For Sleeping Warm In Camp

The general rule of thumb is never roll mummy bags, as this compresses/mats the insulation, reducing its effectiveness. For backpacking, I used the stuff sack with an external frame pack, but when I switched to an internal frame pack, I just stuffed it inside with everything else. For storage...

Thank you! Los Alamos is an interesting little town with some great trails nearby in the Jemez Mountains. I’m still learning my way around the site, but I’ll have a look at the forum.
