What is a good external ham antenna for BaoFeng handeld?

I paired my BF-F8HP with a magmount Diamond MR77SMA and I was pretty happy with the results. Be aware that whatever you buy, you'll also need an SMA-to-SMA adapter too (the BF's idea of an appropriate antenna-jack connector is the opposite gender from the rest of the world). These are easiest...

    Gmrs or ham

I have both installed in my vehicle, but the ham is the one I use most often.

    GMRS Antenna Location

Generally a 3dB difference is the threshold of what is considered "noticeable". The attached diagram shows that there can be a small advantage to roof vs hood if all other factors (mount quality, SWR, etc) are the same - about 2.4dB. To put this in perspective, if both antenna locations had an...

    Funky Tire Pressure Guage

Not as compact as a pencil gauge, but I've had really good luck with this one. It's accurate to 1 PSI, but EXTREMELY consistent**, and about half the price of similar gauges. Longacre 52-52003 Tire Pressure Gauge, 2-1/2 Inch, 0-60 PSI ** If I check a tire's pressure several times in...

No worries! All good here. What was the brand on the lights?

    Mobile Ham Radio

Looks like this might be a common enough issue for the F-150 to support a commercial solution - an aluminum antenna mount bracket for the 3rd brake light on the back of the cab... Would this address the issues and allow the use of both GP & NGP antennas for the original poster? Larson...

    Mobile Ham Radio

Mike, just curious as to what you were seeing? High SWR? Was there positioning dependence too?

    Mobile Ham Radio

Ah. Yes, body bonding is very important, especially at longer wave lengths - 6m, 10m, and CB would likely see noticable issues. I'm not sure 2m or 70cm (for the FTM-400XDR) would see much difference - the ground plane for them is much small - typically the roof or hood. But, as an alternative...

    Mobile Ham Radio

I know that fiberglass is useless as a ground plane (non-conductive) but I had thought that Aluminum (conductive) was an acceptable ground plane for an antenna, even if you won't be able to use a magmount on it. Antennas on the aluminum Ford F 150 CB Radio Guide - What is a groundplane? |...

    Mobile Ham Radio

I have the Yaesu FTM-400XDR in my 4runner. My Diamond NR73BNMO (higher gain long range) is on a Diamond K515SNMO roof rack mount (which is grounded to the roof rack's mounting bolts) - this also lived on a lip mount on the hood for a while where it worked well. I also have COMPACTenna on a...

    Best gps nav, ?

I've tried Apple, Google, and Waze in NM. They mostly work, by I've had issues with them routing me over "state highways" that were really dirt roads - passable in my 4runner, but a Camry would never have made it. Some of the roads it used are even closed several months a year for weather...

    GPS Receiver - Blue Tooth

I have a Dual XGPS160 (very similar to the 150A - I think the difference is that upto 5 devices can simultaneously connect to the 160 and the battery lasts about 20% longer). Where my iPad mounts, the internal GPS typically locks on 3-8 GPS satellites, and I would often find places in the...

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

That's a nice clean install! Do you get any whine/buzz/interference over the radio when you turn on the lights? (what brand lights?)

Lockers are rarely needed, but when you need them, they represent a significant improvement in capability.

    Airing Down Nitrogen Filled Tires

Air them down. Top them off. Ignore the whole "nitrogen" thing. Unless your driving is heavy on high speed and high acceleration, 100% nitrogen vs 78% nitrogen isn't a big difference. On the other hand, washboard roads at 40psi vs 18psi? That might be a "domestic tranquility issue".

The Lexus GX series is basically the vehicle sold as the Toyota Landcruiser Prado outside North America - very comparable to a 4runner. The 470 will have a 4.7liter V8. Kevin and Sarah @Lifestyle Overland. have done a nice series of videos on outfitting Sarah's Lexus GX460 that you might find...

Nothing wrong with Nissan. I'd suggest checking out vehicle specific forums like ClubXterra.org, NewX.org, or XterraNation.org to find out about what tends to break and what tends to be mod'd. They'll also have resources for aftermarket parts.

A nice video comparison of GaiaGPS and OnX OffRoad was just posted to YouTube. I think he hit the main points pretty well, but I'd be interested in anything you might think he missed.

    4x4 Systems Education Sites?

The tires I air down to 15-18psi are the garden variety (soon to be replaced) AT's that came from the factory on my 4runner. Nothing special required.
