    Vehicle expedition prep

In August I’ll be leaving on an expedition to Nain, Labrador from Grand Rapids, MI via the trans Labrador highway, then boat and bush plane. There will not be rock climbing or highly technical Offroading but being the Eagle Scout I am I’d like to be prepared for the worst. Pre travel I plan...

    Build Up in Oil Filter?

Your filter did it’s job, the impact loosened up the sludge that builds up in filters, it’s part of the reason you change them..... A side note on oil, I was part of a fleet study that used Pennzoil, valvoline, mobile, amsoil, and another brand that I can’t remember. The penzzoil had the...

    Sourcing firewood

If you shop at Home Depot or Lowe’s you can usually score free lumber bunk stickers that are often hard wood. I use these for tinder and kindling to start potentially wet or slightly green locally sourced deadfall.

    Solo, Co-pilot, or Group?

I prefer very small groups. In my experience the more people/rigs you add the more likely you will have an inadequately trained or equipped member who will cause issues and become a liability.

    On trail/camp Solar power?

Road, awesome post. Weather and geography plays such a part in the solar world. Michigan stinks for relying on solar. I have a system that works for low use weekend stuff but long term would require a significant battery bank especially if I wanted to use my technology (mobile ham, iPad...

    Biggest fear on the trail????

Running out of bourbon before running out of trail! In reality, injury in which I can’t self extract.

Whats one item you cant camp without?

Whiskey and cigars. They count as one thing for me, they go together like Chinese food and chocolate pudding. (ever been to a Chinese buffet that didn’t have chocolate pudding?)

If there's already a fire, why cook on a stove?

The mission drives the gear for me. Fire cooking is an essential skill that I am teaching my girls however it’s dirty, time consuming, and hard. I enjoy it but time requires other methods. Side note a fun trick to teach your kids, hard boil an egg in a paper cup filled with water placed...

Bedding for camping, what do you use?

My sleep system varies so much depending on what I’m doing. I have a dozen sleeping bags, do I have a problem? For typical overlanding where I’ll sleep in my truck bed or my shiftpod here is my set up, Summer: US Army cot Thermarest Neo Air 25” wide inflatable pad Sierra Designs front...

It is! Also check out Altai Hok skis, they are a hybrid snow shoe and ski. Super fun on the hills!

Real life experience Fox 2.0 coil over lift

I don’t want a large lift, just a moderate increase in height for 33” tires and better Offroad ride quality. Can any of you provide real world experience with the fox 2.0 coil overs? I’m researching these for my front with matching shocks in the rear and perhaps some upper control arms to...

    Icom Id-4100a

The Bluetooth is pretty limited but the dual receive and huge screen are great! I recommend the add on speaker for any of these.

    Antenna recommendations

I’m a huge fan of Larsen antennas, not the cheapest but they work great.

    Icom Id-4100a

I have the 5100 and love it. I don’t currently use d star and I’m going to test out cross band repeat to set up a net for my SAR team on our next call out.

    2006 F150 Tire Size Question...

No way 35” tires will work with a level kit and stock wheels, you need a lot of trimming and wheels with way different back spacing. With that increase in tire size you may consider rehearing as well.

    Camp lantern

I love my Coleman duel full twin mantle, I’ve had it 24 years with no maintenance other than changing mantles. I also use the GZ lantern as well as a yeti400 wth a couple light a life lamps. All are awesome and have there proper uses.

    OB Approved Chain Saws

Keep in mind those batteries are expensive and like all batteries have a short life compared to gas engines. Expect 3-5 years out of most batteries.

Jerry Can, Rotopax, etc. which do you like?

I didn’t like my rotopax at all. They are well built with quality components however real world use stinks. They swell making it damn near impossible to remove from the bracket without smashing your hands. The nozzle is stored inside the can so it will be covered in gas, and your hands will...
