Took a survival class this weekend. Rain followed by ice followed by sleet. Pretty much the worst conditions for fire building. I think the key like many others have said is prep. 1 Vaseline coated cotton ball and my ferro rod along with one handful of tinder found on hung up branches, two...
A note about the dryer lint trick.... it doesn’t work like it used to.
This firestarting trick came about when clothes were all or mostly natural fibers ie cotton, todays clothes are mostly synthetics which melt instead of flame up. Not the best solution.
If it can’t be soaked in water and still light I don’t trust it. Ferry rod and a cotton ball mashed with petroleum jelly is my go to. My back up is fat wood and stormproof matches, bic lighter is third.
Almost every commercial product I’ve seen has failed.
I’m going to test cotton facial...
Nothing big, just started my roof rack system. Yakima base system with canoe carrier and kayak rack. I might add a mega warrior with extension. I’m not expecting to carry a ton on the roof. I may cut the bars down a few inches on each side.

That’s really good to know! I will be on a two week long trip way out of cellular range this fall and want something to message if needed but for how much I would use the service the monthly fee is a bit high. Thanks for sharing!
The iPad has a GPS-A receiver which can be more accuarate than regular GPS in areas where you have cellular signal and as accurate or better than regular GPS. Using an iPad for flight is common practice because they are great GPS units with an awesome screen.
For reference, here is a...
I disagree with this, the gps chipset is great in the iPad, multiple tests have shown it’s actually more accurate than stand alone units outside of high end Trimble units.
I’m a fan of the military cots but it could be I’ve spent enough time in them they have grown on me. Slumberjack xl cots are pretty nice two.
If I want extra comfort I jus put my inflatable pad on my .mil cot.
For your trip are you going to be Offroading and if so how extreme or are you mainly sticking to the highways and dirt roads?
What is your budget for the rack as well as all the lockable, waterproof containers you will place on the roof?(this can get super expensive)
Have you considered a...
I really think low center of gravity builds are the way to go. I have a lot of past experience in the more extreme Offroading and that has suited me well. Losing lift height while maintaining full articulation of your wheel is good in my book for many reasons.
Springs won’t just sag overtime...
You have to be careful with jackets that just have a “DWR” or durable water repellant. Nylon or other fabrics are not hydrophobic or “wicking” and the application of DWR makes it worse. You sweat more than you think and the jacket quickly becomes wet, cold, and clammy inside. Also, DWRs just...
Waterproof and breathable is going to be a compromise. High or low price regardless of what is said, you spend time in waterproof clothes you are going to sweat more than the breathability can keep up with. This is why a hydrophobic base layer instead of cotton is important.
For the money...
I don’t expect to run air tools and I didn’t like the ARB portable solution so I made my own out of a .50 cal ammo can. Works awesome and I can move it from vehicle to vehicle rather easily.
An important part of anyone’s personal first aid kit is also personal information. There is a chance you might not be concious and need someone to give you aid. I would include a laminated sheet that includes blood type, allergies, emergency contacts, etc. It may sound silly but it’s...
