Have you checked out the 100 series section on ih8mud? Years of info and build threads there on the 100 series.... I'm biased but the LX is one of the finest 4x4's platforms ever made...
I made a shifter lock, anti-theft precaution. With the tranny shifter in revers and my 2.2 case engaged, I am able to lock the those two shifters together.
A writeup on my 100 series. My advice would be to install an auxiliary fuse box while you're doing the dual setup....

Excellent video. I think my wife would have that same 'look' if she had been sleeping in the front seat of a 4x4 all night ... BTW you can continue the trail east past Inyo mine, and exit DV. The trail gets much tougher eventually leading to the Echo Canyon 'staircase', a fun technical section...

FWIW hwy. 395 rarely shuts down, and you can reliably reach the 395 via 88 in the winter. If I was going all the way to Alabama Hills from SF, I'd likely just head a little further and go to DV. Alabama Hills is fantastic but I wouldn't plan a trip around going there...check out the Saline...
I mount my (2) 3 gallon Rotopax up on the rack, flat, and towards the rear. I'd be concerned about catching a vertically mounted gas can on something, a branch, a tree, and I'd also be thinking about the increased drag of driving around with a vertically mounted gas can on the roof...
