a lot of state between LA and HMB but I'd be thinking about checking out Big Sur. Hwy. 1 is still closed but there's a way to get to Big Sur from the 101.
Once on hwy. 1 there's forest service land and trails all around. prewitt ridge is a popular free area to camp. Tons of info online...
There are three cabins in Butte Valley, the primo one being the geologist cabin. There are also two, in my opinion, nicer cabins on the South Park Canyon trail in the Panamint Mtns.,(called the Briggs cabin and stone cabin) but you can't access Butte Valley from South Park Canyon.
Depending on...
Panamint Springs>Goler Cny>Mengel Pass>Butte Valley>Badwater>Furnace Creek is doable in one day, I'd plan to be on the trail from PS by 8am if not earlier. Like mentioned above, you'd need to keep rolling and prioritize movement over sightseeing.
Just looking over your itinerary, I'm curious...
The time to get to the Salt tram? I'd say a leisurely 4 hours coming up either Swansea Grade or coming up from Cerro Gordo. It would be more challenging getting to the tram from Cerro Gordo.
The full loop , Swansea grade > Salt tram> Cerro Gordo> back to 190 would be a full day...
I have no experience with Cactus Flat Rd. but I've been up Swansea Grade to the salt tram then down to Cerro Gordo ghost town from there. Swansea Grade is moderately difficult in my opinion. I'm not sure what vehicle you're in but it it is steep, remote, and rough in places. Swansea grade goes...
We just did a family run on a similar route as your proposed route. There are plenty of backcountry camping opportunities and spots in DV.

"Death Valley National Park's backcountry has a variety of rugged mountain and desert terrain. More...
Over winter break, my family and I spent 3 nights in DV. Highlights include Mengel Pass, The Racetrack, Lippincott Rd. and the Saline Valley. Here's the video I put together....
Deer Valley is definitely a "difficult" trail. We ran Slickrock and Deer Valley in a day a few months back. DV is like running 2, or perhaps 3, Slickrock's, if that makes sense. Here's a writeup I put on Expo...
A reserve air tank is totally unnecessary for your application and 99% of people. If you're looking for a project or got the mod bug that's one thing, but a portable 12v compressor with alligator clips is all you need...

My dual install. You might end up wanting to power other circuits beside the fridge so might as well do it right from the start and go duals. Including the cost of a deep cycle, you can...
