Gold Mountain, Holcomb Valley, Dishpan Springs...and John Bull is like a mini Rubicon. Big Bear has tons of wheelin', check out Jacoby Canyon for a nice moderate trail to get started...many Big Bear trails are in the So. Cal 4x4 guidebook.
The 22r motor has an excellent reputation for reliability. It's very simple and straightforward to work on and parts are still readily available and cheap. What the motor does not have is power. You're looking at maybe 120 HP out of a fresh engine. Torque is not much higher. Is that sufficient...
If you're looking for dirt roads right on the coast, check out Usal Rd., otherwise called the "Lost Coast" area. Nothing too difficult but a really nice trail that lets you drive out onto the beach at times.
The last step was to wire every thing up. I went with 2/0 gauge welding wire for my main cables. I added the yellow wire sheathing just for looks....
Then a few circuit breakers later, a relay here and there, and a generous helping of zip ties and it was all over...
A few other...
There are numerous types of solenoids available for connecting and disconnecting batteries. The range is literally a $20 dollar solenoid at AutoZone and a $500 computer controlled electronic marvel that senses your every thought and anticipates your mood and when and where and why to disconnect...
What's up OB, I'd like to share my dual battery install. Much of the info is copied over from my LX build thread, but I'll add a few more pics and details here...
The impetus for the dual was that I wanted to run a 12v fridge in camp and I wanted redundancy in my ability to start my truck...
You can head east past Bodie all the way into Nevada via dirt roads. There's a small town/mine site called Aurora east of Bodie. You can then head north and come back west into the Bodie Hills/Masonic area.
There's many fun and low traffic roads out there....
for question 3, you could head up silver canyon just north of bishop into the white mtns. it's steep but easy, takes you as high as 11 or 12k feet, then exit Wyman canyon back to bishop....
I understand that this hobby we all enjoy of 4wheelin' and overlanding can be expensive, but I cannot fathom the idea of paying $1,500+ for a roof rack. That motivated me to make a rack for my 100 series...
The goal was to make a rack to hold my awning, gas cans, and hilift. Here's what I cam...
I don't quite understand the only use 3 weeks a year part. Will this deep cycle get charged by your alternator? I have a yellow top and I've had good luck with several other red tops for my starter...
I was curious for years how much my built Runner weighed. I was really surprised it only tipped the scales at a little over 5k fully loaded. Still not sure if that is over GVW and don't really care...
The trail goes past Deer Lake, it is moderate and a stock 4x4 could make it fine. There is a short side road that goes down to Deer Lake and that road has one very difficult section. Not recommended for unmodified vehicles...
I'm really excited about Deer re-opening. There's not that many difficult trails along hwy. 4 and both Slick and Deer are both difficult and scenic...looking forward to Aug. 3...
quick question: where did you hear that Deer valley trail was re-opening? This is great news, you can take that trail from hwy. 4 to 88. Nice report...
