We have 2 dogs, a Chocolate Lab and a Lab Mutt. The Chocolate Lab (Millie) love the car and any ride. She goes crazy when we say "want to go for a ride", she runs out to the car or truck and wags her tail jumping till we open the door and she leaps in. The Mutt (Milton) is not as thrilled. He...
Here is my problem, I have the Discovery pass, but the Forest pass is not available. I guess I will just go and not worry about it. If I get a ticket, so be it.
Couple of quick questions, do we need both a Discover Pass and a Forestry Pass? Or is the Discovery pass alone OK?
Could someone explain the PL-Tones? I got my GMRS radio and License last week and other than installing it, I have yet to do more than turn it on to make sure it works. If there is...
I just went out and checked, I got a Discovery Pass last year in August, so I am still good with that one for a couple of months. I also dug out my Butler map of the BDR and my GPS is loaded with the tracks.
I am really getting excited for this, just a few little details and I am ready.
Name: Scott and Rachel Solomon
Vehicle: 90 GMC Suburban
Souls: Wife, Myself and Chocolate Lab Millie.
Comms: CB, GMRS, and HAM for listen only.
Experience: Many years camping, wheeling, and have done the BDR on a motorcycle.
Duration: will do the full Monty.
I am also not stuck on the bridge crossing idea. I have done this route before on a motorcycle and have pictures from that trip.
I am also more than happy to help lead.
I live not too far from Bethel Ridge(about 10 miles), I go there for a quick weekend or day trip. Last night we had a huge rain storm with really strong winds. I would not be surprised to find out that there are more trees down. We may have to do some trail clean up. I would rather clear the...
Yes, it is a toll bridge, you will need cash. For cars trucks and SUVs it is $2.
I am also thinking about getting a Hotel for the night, it would be an early morning if not.
For comms, I have GMRS and just got my license. However, I can only listen to HAM, no TX. The schedule looks great.
Dispersed camping will have to be something we look at day by day. I have done this route and where each day "ends" is in town. We will want to camp shortly before the end, or at...
Well, I guess I will have to check back. I asked them to contact me as soon as the testing was reopened, and I have not heard from them. To be fair, I have spent the last month driving back and forth the Southern California for work. I have done over 6000 miles in the last 4 weeks, so I have not...
I agree. FRS is great for spotting, but they have a very limited range.
Even having a GMRS to listen would be better than nothing, however registering with the FCC is not a big deal, I just did it on Saturday. Should have both the radio and the license tomorrow.
Of course kids are welcome. Overlanding is about FAMILY, we are out to have fun, spend time with family and as I said above, dogs are family.
As of right now for comms, it looks like GMRS is going to be the primary comms, I also have a CB and can relay if needed. I have a HAM, but due to CoVid...
Dogs are not a problem. I think several of us will have dogs along, I know I will. They are family and part of why we do this is to spend time with family. Just be sure to be respectful, clean up after them and keep them on a leash and all will be good.
The stock 16in rims from the older trucks are 6in wide. If you get some wheels from a 90-2000's Ford Van, they are 6.5 in wide. They are stamped Accuride and I plan to put those on my Suburban.
As far as I know the plan is the whole week, and the whole BDR from Bridge of the Gods to Nighthawk. However anyone can feel free to exit at anytime as long as you let us know before you go so we don't go looking for you. In the same way, if you want to meet us part way and go to the end, that...
I agree, and if I could afford them I would just get the best. However at this point my travels are limited to trips of a week or less mostly in my home state. I am also running a stock square body Suburban. I will be on FS and DNR roads. My rig is just not a “Wheeler”. I used to do that and I...
I just did some checking and from everything I can see, the Forests are open, all roads are open. Some developed camp grounds will likely still be closed, but we will be dispersed camping so that is not an issue.
Thankfully our Governor wants the revenue stream from fishing and hunting and has...
I am still in on this. As a matter of fact I told my wife we are going even if we go alone.
As it is getting closer I think we need to start hammering out the details, like what time and where we will meet up, what comms we plan to use on the trip, etc.
The traditional start of the WABDR is...
Very nice. I had 2 Gen 1 Monteros, a 2 and a 4 door. I loved them both, great rigs. I love the way yours looks, should be a lot of fun. Looks like it is in great shape for an old truck. Great find.
