What is your preferred shelter? (Rooftop Tent vs Ground Tent vs Etc...)

I live and camp in coyote, bear, and cougar country. I have never beem bothered. The wife says I snore like a freight train, so thay might have something to do with it. But if a bear or cougar want to get to you no tent is going to stop them.

    Overlanding with "stock" 4X4

I kind of need to upgrade my suspension. The leaf springs are 23 years old and starting to sag. Any load in the hatch causes it to sag too far. A set of Ironman 4x4 leaf springs that are heavier duty are the same price as factory replacements so it makes sense. So it will end up with a 1.5-2.0"...

What is your preferred shelter? (Rooftop Tent vs Ground Tent vs Etc...)

Lol. I'm 36, 175 lbs. I've been sleeping in hammocks in the woods for 7 or 8 years now. I sleep fantastic in them.

You don't need trees for a hammock. I'm leaning towards a setup like this.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

After playing around making that discada/skottle i decided it was finally time to fix the driver's side oil leak and install new plugs and wires.

On the fence - push me over: buy or build a skottle?

I'm going to pick up several flap discs for my grinder after work today. This fits perfectly over my well loved Bayou Classic burner.

On the fence - push me over: buy or build a skottle?

Now begins the tedious process of cleaning and seasoning.

First you cut out a piece of steel to fill the hole in the middle. The you sand off as much as the surface junk as you can. Then you use a borrowed, under-powered 115V stick welder to cram as many 6013 rods as you can in there. Immediately grind everything as smooth as possible without...

    Thinking outloud, please interject.

Overwatering, aka sailing, is another thing I fell in love with after moving to the PNW from Texas. The ultimate goal is to retire on a boat and take off. But we have 13+ years before that happens. So for now we will travel by land and keep homebase in a great school district.

    '06 Jeep Commander build progress

The 3.7 and 4.7 liters are much more prone to cracking heads and dropping valves than the Hemis. But it only happens when they have been overheated. Most common cause is a leak from the upper coolant passage o-ring on the timing cover. You can't see the leak from the top and from the bottom it...

    Aux battery

I am seeing a lot of not-so-good reviews on Renogy products.

Are you a day tripper, Weekender, Weeker, Full Timer?

Right now we are just day-trippers. Hit up one of the local forest service roads, cook up lunch or dinner, then head home.

    Toyota guys

What you described is a faulty release/throwout bearing. The transmission needs to be removed to change it. While you are in there it is recommended to replace the clutch disc and pressure plate. I always recommend the flywheel be removed and machined or replaced if it has excessive blueing...

    Thinking outloud, please interject.

One thing I didn't mention is that I got this Montero Sport for free. Including taxes, maintenance, and repairs I am in to the thing $385. That includes timing belt/water pump, tune up, starter, front brakes/bearing pack. The valve guides were repaced under the original warranty. So i am already...

    Refurbishing a cheap Disco 1

Wow. I am genuinely surprised at how inexpensive a lot of these parts are. There seems to be a lot of redundancy as well with bearing sizes, u-joints, etc. Are there any common catastrophic engine failures? I have seen some listed for sale with misfires that can't be sorted out or timing chain...

    Favorite Overland Mods

I am a tinkerer by trade and choice. Nothing I own is left stock. But seriosuly, why did i have to get in to sailing? I need to replace the thru-hulls which is going to cost $1200 for bronze parts.
