Buy the nicest, lowest mile vehicle you can afford, keep aside money for proper tires and some basic recovery gear. Get out with the truck and then determine what it might need. Tinkering on the thing is polar opposite from it being broken.......
Have you considered finding a duffle bag for each person? I've become a fan of the packing cube things. One main cube with a few smaller cubes inside, everything stays organized better. find ones the proper size and each person only gets to pack what fits? I can see 4 small duffle bags / packing...
To piggy back on this, during and after each trip, think about what items never get used, which items are junk, which could use replacing and which items only carry along on certain trips. I've used this to really pair down gear.
Also, using compression sacks for your existing sleeping bags...
That's actually not the worst idea I've ever heard. I actually have three sitting in my basement from my home brewing days. The pressure and liquid hoses are a quick connect style. One could easily modify it for use without pressure. Set it up so one is the vent, the other has a hose and a party...
I think the topic, while valid, is being over thought. Yes, storing drinking water long term in plastic can lead to leeching issues, BUT.... if a person flushes the container before each use and fills fresh before a trip, It's not going to be an issue in the day or days the water is sitting...
I've got a Frontier, but, I'd suggest you go to a Toyota dealer with your car seat and try it out in both vehicles. what I find the main issue in my truck is the roof height and getting my dude in and out of the seat.
I never do. Though, the main reason is All the free flat repairs and rotations I get from discount tire for buying tires there in the first place, I feel if I have to buy a tire here and there, I'm still even.
I'm in process of doing similar, but my plan is to be able to mount my hi-lift and Maxtrax on the sides and either a cargo basket or cargo box on top of the bars (having a low set made that clear the tonneau as it rolls up) depending on if I am in DD / road trip / adventure mode.
There is no...
I'm also a fan of silence or talking with your partner. You never realize how busy life is and how you never really just sit and chat about nothing/everything with your partner. One thing we like to do is have the passenger follow along on the Atlas and look for and point out things of...
Makes me think about the guys I go "overlanding" with and their vehicles. We range from a VERY low dollar Jeep XJ, a second Gen 4runner with no lift, and some good tires, a couple of midsize trucks with mild suspension work and a jeep JK on 35s. Guess what? we all make it to the destination, all...
The rear and rear door windows are OEM tinted on my truck. I had the front side windows tinted 40% (state law is 50%). Part of it was to make the truck look nicer, as I thought it looked odd but it has helped keep the truck cool in the summer and has added a little bit of security as it makes...
Repeaterbook is a great source. the website allows you to search by bands and major interstates as well as the map. I'll figure out the best repeaters along the route and also print out the home pages for each repeater and scribble some notes for myself.
Another thing to take in to account wheel offset is related to wheel width. A wider wheel with the same offset sticks further out as well as in to the wheel well.
How many layers do you have on? I've found if I have too many layers active, it really bogs down my tablet. Try turning off a layer at a time and see where you end up.
Not so much overland related, but my wife picked up a sweet step through bike. Mint green and all. On sale, we used our dividend, got a hell of a price out the door.
I'll be adding pins for the base and handle. A friend mentioned he put a pin on the handle so he can use it as a cheater bar if needed. Easier on and off and no need to carry a separate cheater bar on the trail.
