My fairly new Colemen crapped out recently. I bought the Camp Chef Everest 2X to replace it. It has been used on 3 trips now, 2 of them 5 day+, as the only cooking stove and it is a great stove for the money. Gets plenty hot and has very good heat control.
Last night we went to the top of one the local buttes so my wife could get some sunset and comet shots.
The first two are from my phone, the last three (the good ones) are done by my wife.
Yes, I drove through it yesterday. It's kinda become one of those little touristy way stops. Tumalo Feed Company has really good food if you want a nice dinner.
A few Central Oregon points of interest to consider:
Steens Pillar
Crack in the Ground
Christmas Valley Dunes
Fort Rock
Alvord Desert
My oldest son, the dog and I ran the Gambler 500 for one day. Did 350 miles of dirt on Saturday, I can tell I'm getting older, I'm a little sore today.
Here is the dog and I with the Murder Hornet during a "pit" stop to water the forest.

Jalapenos in the Dutch oven - cut off stems and clean out seeds. Mix cream cheese, diced white onion, real bacon crumbles (make extra bacon at breakfast), powdered garlic and Johnny's seasoning salt. Stuff jalapenos, coat with olive oil and bake in Dutch oven.

I have been camping out of the off road trailer and not using the other gear lately. We went for 5 days in the drift boat for the first time since last summer. Found out it was time for some gear upgrades - the old Coleman camp stove finally gave up the ghost, the left burner no longer shuts...
I am comfortable with the multiple day/no human contact/no cell service trips - exploring, hunting and fishing. Some of the places that we go, we won't see anyone else for a week unless it's through a set of binos. I have spent the night in the woods with just my day hunting pack contents.

Unthreading it and storing it is your best option. That way it won't fall off or "walk" away. I have the lock cylinders on both of my mounts and haven't had a problem, but they along with the Master locks that I have on everything and my hitch locks get a little shot of WD-40 with every vehicle...
No cure, it never ends. Been wheeling and camping, now called overlanding for 40 years. There's always cooler, better stuff available. It's constant high grading and improving of your vehicle and gear. But there are worse addictions.
I love that river, it's beautiful. I fly fish it regularly since I'm only 40 minutes away. I have never had an issue while camping along multiple different spots. I would say that was an isolated incident for that river.
