Background: Before the Taco, I had a 2006 Jeep Wrangler TJ. The TJ got me more into the off-roading community and eventually led me to the overlanding community. I was foolish when I bought it and got screwed by a bad salesmen (maybe a good one from the companies persepctive). I was way under on the TJ for a few years and had to refinance it a few times to reduce my rate. During that time I continued modding it more and more for the off-roading I was doing. I then bought a 1967 M416 (Burrito) and semi restored it since I didnt have room in the jeep and it was light enough to tow. I eventually got married and our 2 dogs starting to come along with us so it was time to upgrade and get out from under a bad buy. Enter the Taco, this time I knew exactly what I wanted and how to negotiate a better buy. I ended up with an MGM 2017 Tacoma TRDOR 4x4 DCSB AT (Taco) and was happy with the final purchase price. I learned a lot while building the TJ and knew what I wanted out of the box, one of those being a locker which led me to the TRD Off Road edition. I also knew I needed room for our dogs to join, so I got a 4 door Dual Cab model.

Daily driver and overland build. The end goal is to have a home away from home on the trail that I can enjoy with friends and family. This will be a build that someone could copy on a thrifty budget. Most of the stuff was bought through a group buy, secondhand, or on sale.

Looking forward to seeing the build. We basically have the same story. I also have a 17 TRDOR but started in jeeps as well. First Jeep was a 99 XJ then I went to a 05 TJ Rubicon, which I still have but battle myself daily on whether or not to keep it. I’m building mine as I go, just ordered sliders and am looking at uprgrading tires.

Quick question, where did you mount your cab and antenna? I ordered a unisex 520 but am returning it and thinking of going with a Cobra 75 WX since I couldn’t really find a good mounting spot.

I used a midland cb that can be powered by 12v socket or batteries and can be hooked to a mounted antenna or use a 6" antenna. It stays in my glove box unless I am on the trail or need to listen to the weather/emergency broadcast. My antenna is mounted on the tailgate using a comet rs720 mount, it requires no drilling or anything so I went that route given I didnt want to drill into my new truck yet.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to check deeper into the midland.

I've got the same truck. I've really enjoyed it in the short time I've had it. The first thing I purchased for mine was all pro off road sliders and modular rack for the bed. I have my awning and rtt mounted to it. We're in very similar situations in that I have an old trailer that I refurbished and made it a great camping trailer. I mean overland trailer. :) good luck on the continued build.

What was the price of the China 270 awning and where do I get one :)

I got into a group buy on tacomaworld.com, I believe it ended up being $270 per person after the shipping and port fees were counted in. Once they arrive in the US its shipping from CA to GA for $60. Its almost exactly like foxwing and they have an assortment of colors. I waited for others to receive theirs from the first group buy and read reviews on construction and quality before committing to order mine.

There's a couple of web sites that have it Ali Baba is one of them the only bad part is that it'll take sometimes up to 30 days or 45 days to receive them but I could order them through my company and then distributed to whoever joins in on it with us I have two buddies of mine that will join in so that well we for people already if you're in

We sent our orders in early december, theyre due to arrive this month. It takes a while but cannot argue with the savings over a a name brand model.

I see your MGM Taco and raise you a silver one. :)
I got this 2018 Off Road DCSB about 1.5 weeks ago with the plan to moderately outfit it for overlanding with my son. It’s also my DD so I don’t want to go too nuts just yet. I just picked up a used KB Voodoo tonneau cover rack that will go over my Diamondback cover for my RTT. Your build looks good, I’d love to see a photo of your drill-less antenna mount you have. Thanks!7CB0D57A-F9C4-4D85-BC27-165010F860BF.jpeg

Reseasoned my cast iron with flax seed oil and it worked out great. Used it while in Apalachicola NF, also messed up a tire down there and decided it was time to upgrade from the stickers after 1 full year and 15k miles of ownership so I ordered some 265/75r16 falken wildpeak at3w. I read a ton of reviews and articles and settled on this tire, I will see how they work out for me. Got them for less than $500 shipped to my door.

Tires look good, much more aggressive in person than they look online so that's a plus (several reviews had mentioned that). I am excited to get them mounted now.
