Overland Bound WA Trip - August 2016

Hey everyone - @Michael and I are starting to plan a 3-day trip in the WA area the weekend of July 22nd.

Here's the logistics... I would drive up from Nor CA and arrive Thurs 7/21 with the rig, and then pick up Michael from SEA that evening. We'd hit the road on Friday morning, and then we'd need to return to get Michael back on a plane Sunday night, 7/24.

Suggestions on where we should go? What we should do?

...And who wants to come along with us? :)

Let me know thoughts/ideas/routes. We're excited to get up North!

If you're going through SeaTac, Wenatchee, Rainier, or the Olympic Mountains are probably your best choices for maximizing your time and experiences.

I'm sure that there will be others that will chime in.

@jdunk Great! Yes, close to SeaTac so M can get in Thursday evening, and we can get rolling early Friday.

We'd like to lock in a plan/route, and then announce in the trip thread.

Great suggestions. I second Naches Pass and Fortune Creek if you are looking for an off-road day and/or camping trip.

And I would love to come along!

Thanks for starting the route conversation off everyone! Fortune Creek looks amazing. How limited is camping, and how accessible is the location? We like routes that combine views with off-road technical 'gatekeepers'. If we leave early on Friday and come back Sunday on the early side, we could do 3 hours travel from Seattle.

And I made a scheduling error... We would have to do Thursday, July 28th - Sunday, July 31st. (My bad!)

@Michael - Making sure you're on this thread. :)

I'd be willing to roll out that weekend or at least meet up for a day trip. From Seattle you'd be able to hit most of the central WABDR, not too challenging but some amazing views of this state:)

Whats the plan for coming through Oregon? If you pass through Central Oregon (Bend-ish), there are some killer breweries around.

Another vote for the WABDR route. I haven't traveled the route exactly but I have explored the areas it goes thru and it is beautiful country. With the current snow levels you should be able to drive most of the areas.

Umtanum Ridge: Highway-821 is awesome.
Liberty! (Find the ghost town off Route-97)
(There are routes through here for the WABDR).

From Portland: Gifford Pinchot Forest.
Takhlakh Lake
Mt St Helens

If you're staying well West and north,
Hurricane Ridge
Lake Cushman
Ruby Beach

Just did the southern half of the WABDR last weekend, all clear!!!

To my knowledge the tiny little roundabout is the camping area, I've never been to it since my only trip up there already had people at it. As far as challenging we've gotten stock xterras up there in the past. I've also seen YouTube videos of LR3s up there. There is plenty of camping in the Salmon La Sac area (10 miles before the start of the trail) and Lake Cle Elum area (15 or so miles before the trail).

Also, for the end of July, don't plan on being able to have a camp fire.
