I've been a little hesitant to completely buy into the media reports that we've reached a turning point of sorts, and that things are starting to head in the right direction for the first time in several months.

That all changed yesterday when I went grocery shopping and found the SPAM section was not empty. In fact, it was almost full!!! They even had regular old high sodium, high fat, not flavored with anything SPAM... At first, I thought it was a mirage, as we haven’t had SPAM in our stores since this whole mess started. Then I got a little weak in the knees and a bit choked up when I reached down and touched a can and found it was real.

I'm a little embarrassed about what happened next... I immediately looked to see if there were any "two per customer” signs posted that I might need to tear down. Then I blocked the section with my body and my shopping cart and started filling it with cans of SPAM. I didn’t even look to see what flavors I was grabbing. I noticed my breathing and heart rate were elevated, and I could feel a surge of adrenalin coursing throughout me as I was laser focused on filling my cart as quickly and as efficiently as possible. All of the sudden I stopped, stood up, looked around, and realized I was the only one in the isle. I looked down into my cart and thought "Do I really need 24 cans of SPAM?" Duh!!! Of course I do!!!

Then it hit me… If they have SPAM, they MUST have toilet paper. Maybe things are taking a turn for the better. I rushed to the paper goods section so fast that the wheels on my cart got a high-speed wobble causing the cans of SPAM to rattle quite loudly. Ignoring the looks I was getting from the other shoppers, I pushed on. After what seemed like an eternity, I finally reached the paper goods section on the opposite side of the store, only to find it completely empty! Damn… In an instant, my hopes & dreams were shattered.

I was however, able to console myself on the drive home thinking of all the wonderful recipes I have yet to try, substituting SPAM for what ever meat they call for.

Spam is delicious when you add it to a package of budae-jjigae ( korean army stew )noodles, along with some kimchi and tofu. If you haven't tried it, please do! It's amazing on a cold night out camping. It'll warm you right up and it all can be boiled in one pot!

Interesting. I've been doing this with Ramen noodles for a long time. Makes a good filler lol.

So my best modified version is actually Maruchan Yakisoba Noodle pack ( chewier, thicker noodle ) with cut up hot dogs, korean spam ( a little less salty ), firm tofu, kimchi and sliced garlic w/ half and half of chicken stock/water. I pre-prep everything before a trip, and put the hot dogs, spam, tofu and garlic in a bag with sesame oil, and the kimchi & broth together in a container, then throw everything in the pot and let it simmer for 15 minutes... OMG... delicious!

Since the virus/pandemic led "others" to discover "our" beloved SPAM, It's often sold out in my local stores. I tried "Armour TREET". Not too good. I much prefer this, Dollar General's house brand.

Have any of you tried (dare I say) a SPAM alternative (I know, I know, there is no substitute)

That have you tried & how was it?KIMG0229.JPG

I think it was Marie Antoinette that said "Let them eat cake" and they chopped off her head. 225 years later, and I get the same reaction to Spam. Wife won't touch it, kids run from it, and even the roaches scurry around it. I don't get it. When I pop open a can of Spam and that big gelatinous lump falls onto the paper plate still holding the shape of the can, my mouth can't help but water. Its a delicate balance of salt, fat and nitrites that make my taste buds tingle. (My left arm also starts tingling after eating a can for some reason). I think its the perfect food... no refrigeration, indefinite shelf life, and you don't even need a can opener. Even after opening a can, the contents can stay out a long time and are still as good as the day it was congealed at the factory.

All I know is that if eating Spam is wrong, I don't ever want to be right! So, for all the Spam eaters out there...raise your plastic spork in a toast to the world's most perfect food! Did I say toast? Yeah, Spam goes great on that, too!
spam is a fine delicacy here in Hawaii. From the famous loco moco to musubi! literally will see palets of spam at our Costco. hahah

Yeah, Treet was a little bit nasty and didn't fry well and I tried the Great Value brand and it sucked and didn't fry well either. I didn't try the Dollar General brand, but we have a lot of them around here, so I'll definitely give it a try.

A whole thread dedicated to the glory of Spam... I think this is about to become my new favorite place on this site. I never even considered Spam before I joined the Navy, but much like my coffee habit the Navy sure taught me otherwise. Spam and eggs is still my favorite morning standby for when I actually have time to make myself breakfast.

Armor Treet and mac for dinner tonight. We'll see if it works out the same as Spam. Gotta love duty days...

Edit to add: it was ok. Not as good as Spam and Mac, but you do what you have to in this day and age.

Korean Spam???? People here are worried about what is in US SPAM.... heaven knows about Korean Spam.

If you are worried about Spam, never visit a meat packing plant and see what goes into Chorizo.

One of my favorites: Spam Fries

1 (12 oz.) can Spam, sliced into 1/4" to 1/2" fingers
½cup flour
1 egg, beaten
1 cup panko bread crumbs
Vegetable oil for frying

Cooking process:

In a large skillet or fryer; warm oil. In separate shallow dishes; place flour, beaten egg and panko. Slice Spam in to fingers 1/4 inch or so. Dust Spam lightly with flour. Dip into beaten egg and coat with panko and pat well. Deep-fry breaded Spam for a few minutes; until browned on both sides. Drain on paper towels .

Serve with sweet chili sauce or Tonkatsu sauce
