Overland Trip Planning: Know Before You Go

Nice. Our trip for 2017 this spring is all planned out and we are already beginning to plan for our 2018 trip. A friend asked about what we were talking about the other night, our next vacation? That's 4 months away! I replied, it is a never ending process. It continues until the day we leave...

I need your Winter Camping Tips

One important thing we learned last March in 10 to 15 degree nights. Our Big Agnes bags are rated for 15 degrees and we both froze our butts off for two nights. We went into town and I got on line and did a bit of research about being so darned cold in these state of the art bags.... We were...

Why a trailer? Pros and cons

Yes it can be a PITA seting everything up for just one evening, then packing it all in the the next morning. We carry two tents to solve that PITA. The big tent for base camp/multiple night stays, or our 2 man ultralite backpackng tent for those one night stays.

What Did You Do With Your Rig Today?

Just finished up replacing the original radiator and original power steering pump. While I was in there I put new belts on.

    Magazine story

Thanks KW. Our trip was last March, beginning in Big Bend and ending at the Staircase. We were out a little over 5 weeks. It was tuff to condense it all into 1500-2000 words, so I chose to give an overview of most of our trip, and a couple of paragraphs to our favorite places, along with a tiny...

    1996--80 series/LX450--Triple locked & Loaded

Contact Kurt @ Cruiseroutfitters direct. They market the Old Man Emu kits and they don't cost a ton. However, they don't like, nor should they be reffered to as "lift" kts. The OME is a suspension that happens to give your vehicle a couple more inches in stature. ( LOL ) good luck

    Magazine story

Last night about 7 pm I submitted my first overlanding story for publication in a Magazine. A writer friend of mine, that has been published often, reminded me that the publication owns my manuscript for 6 months, so I do not dare share it on social media. If published, it will be one small...

smittybilt 20 foot tow strap $10...

unless smittybilt has come a very long way in the past 10 years or so, I wouldn't go near it. The last thing anyone needs while recovering or being recovered is for the stitching to start breaking apart, or worse yet for the strap to just rip apart. I've always found recovery straps found at...

What tires do you like? (Merged Thread)

When I had my TJ rubicon I ran E rated KM tires only, for way too many reasons than I care to articulate on this post. I ran them at right around 30 psi unless we were loaded down, then 34psi. And they were great in all kinds of weather, albeit a bit noisy. I'd run nothing less than a D...

    Roof rack for JKU

OK GUYS,,,,the original post on this was not my post.. I don't own a JKU, and I already have a rack... I've been hi-jacked,,, but I will add my 2 cents to the OP from Virginia that posed the question....... I shopped for a rack for my 80 series for nearly 2 years, himming and hawing over this...

    Roof rack for JKU

I have been researching the rack options, and it seems there are three ways to go. 1. Gobi - a fan favorite. While I am not a fan of the install around the bumper and front end, not drilling into the hard top is always preferred. 2. Frontrunner and AEV - both are pretty similar though I...

What tires do you like? (Merged Thread)

wow,, electronic power steering? Whoa... I hate to be off topc here, but I hope for your sake that EPS doesn't turn into a nightmare as so many chevy innovations have over the years.. I just replaced my old school gear driven ps pump. It had 21 years and 260,000 miles on it. Good luck with that...

What tires do you like? (Merged Thread)

I'm not up on Chevys. Is that a solid front axle? I ask because I have heard that IFS can be very picky about what tires work well.

Just curious here, what are you driving? I've heard that complaint about BFGs more than once.

What tires do you like? (Merged Thread)

Been running BFGs for nearly 3 decades. My current set is the old version of KOs. They currently have 45,000 miles on em and still going strong with minimal even treadwear. I must point out that I do rotate 5 tires. This Feb or March I'll be getting a new set (not even going to shop) as we...

    Hello East Coasters!

We have always been a bit surprised at how empty it is. Yes, it covers a huge area, and if one explored all of it, it would take several days, but my point being. In our region it would seem that nearly every other vehicle is a jeep, yet when one goes into areas in Pa such as Bald Eagle, hardly...

    Hello East Coasters!

Bald Eagle State Forest is a neat area with "permitted" rustic camping or camp in any of the state parks. It is especially good this time of year as all of the gates are open to two tracks that are closed for 9 months out of the year.
