  • Guest, UPDATE We went through the site migration runbook and completed all steps. We will need to complete the migration next week, but will leave the forums up for the weekend. A few days after maintenance, a major upgrade revision to the forum site will occur.

    Camp security

We keep an anally retentive clean and well organized campsite. Everything has it's place and all places have their things. Heavy winds, rainstorm, bears, ravens? No problem, we are already in the habit of putting things away as soon as we are done using them. Thieves? Where we camp? I won't say...

    Crazy people?

Yup, I’m constantly doing away with stuff that we never use. Plastic wine glasses - gone! Seriously though, we have what we use & and use what we have and we’re good for 5 or 6 days off grid. Saftey kit, PLB and heavy tools are with us always and hopefully will never be used.

    12v fridge recommendations

Interesting observation I’ve made. Go to any other overlanding forums and the advice given for fridge freezers is completely different than here on these forums. Fridge freezer selection is all about quality of build, reputation and amp draw. That only leaves 5 or 6 brands that are worthy of...

    Crazy people?

Last night we had my wife’s sister & husband over for dinner. They drag a big trailer around and that is camping for them. They asked about our last trip and as we were telling about how remote the Maze is, then traversing down into Glenn Canyon, setting up camp in the dark , in a sandstorm...

Internet Connection while overlanding and the announcement of Starlink

He kinda thinks out loud, unfiltered. I’ve been accused of that more than once; LOL

    Good tire pressure video

The Aussies get it. I really like these kinds of confirmation videos letting me know I’ve been doing it right for decades.

    In need of being educated….

agreed, timelines can be combersome. Any info on great secluded wild camping spots in Vermont? New Englanders seem to be very tight lipped and I totally get why. We settle for Moosalamoo campsite each summer. Nice place, and explore from there. So far, after 3 summers, still can’t find...

    In need of being educated….

Not valley of the gods, nor is it monument valley. It may well be somewhere along or a track diverting from the Kokepelli trail overlooking Castle Valley. One way to be sure? Get out and explore. I’m one of those guys that stay mum about the cool places we have been, as discovering places on...

Internet Connection while overlanding and the announcement of Starlink

Yup, I didn’t mention that I also carried a fast express card for multiple border crossings a week. So everything I did was on record.

    Trasharoo alternative

We are still using a trasharoo I purchased years ago. I coat it with Nikwax often and added cinch strap buckles. It looks old and worn out, but it still works well. If and when it ever wears out I’ll replace it with another. I think the key is to keep it nikwaxed.

Internet Connection while overlanding and the announcement of Starlink

Hey, try hauling haz mat for a living. If one isn’t doing anything wrong, then no problems. If your running illegal then yup, big fines and loss of license. With computers, paperless log books and random drug tests my entire life was monitored. The trade off? Great pay, benefits, and early...

    Getting the right vehicle

Hmmm, $5000 or lower. The very first vehicle that comes to my mind would be a Toyota RAV4 first generation. Dependable and open to slight modifications both interior and exterior. Lift it an inch or two for larger AT tires, baseline the mechanical stuff, fold the rear seats down, throw some...

Wisdom heard today from an overlanding old-timer about where to start

We’ve been doing this quite a while and drag a lot of glamping gear with us. Trailer, with RTT, water tanks, kitchen with tap water, chairs, table, day packs, 10 gallons extra fuel, etc etc. at 1400 lbs. Our 80s GVWR, is right at 7,000 lbs and with all the stuff, freezer, fridge, clothing...

    Rude? Yay or nay

Interesting outlook. In an off handed way we do pay for private camping , very private camping, way off the beaten path, by investing in equipment that’ll get us way away from others. When we are that far into the backcountry weve only ever encountered likeminded people. One thing certain...

    Unusual Gear

I carry straight round up. Next morning everything within 50 yards is dead. No fleas, no flies, no ticks, no mosquitoes. LOL ! Weed wacker? Where do you guys find the room for such a cumbersome tool?

    Toilet

He sure does, wow! We’re good for 11 days away from societal conveniences at a time. Then we have to find water, food, & petrol. Used to be a blue bucket, trash can liner, and a box of lime. Before that? A shovel, some leaves and a good pair of scissors ! LOL

    Toilet

We’ve used several different kinds over the years. This model from Cleanwaste is easy to pack and has been with us for going on 7 years.

Interesting thoughts to ponder! What's your take?

I'll follow up on that. Interesting, I do not dis-embrace technology in the least, and I do not shun mapping technology for the sake of nostalgia. I find it humorous, when a broad brush is used to accuse paper map folks of shunning technology, when here I am, typing on a modern keyboard and...

    Desert Solitaire

Desert Solitaire; Edward Abbey It is not so much about overlanding as it is about the immersion of one’s self into the wilderness.

    Tiny A cabin...

That’s a great idea, I’ve often thought had I stayed on the farm I would have done this out on the back pasture, on a bluff overlooking the lake I grew up on. As it is, I have a small barn in my backyard that I’ve often considered building a bunkhouse up top with kitchen & bath, just for...
