    Campground Insanity

People, did not, nor currently want more rules, as you say. People that truly enjoy remote areas want them to remain pristine and remote. Rules are necessary because others do not follow the principles of leave no trace or tread lightly. If those principles are enforced, via permits, etc, etc...

    Jeep TJ

I used TJs for about 15 years. Keep everything light. Keep the stock bumpers. The stock tire carrier can be modified so that 33” tires will clear the rear bumper by using 1” nylon spacers and longer grade 8 bolts on the bottom tilting the bottom of the tire out just enough to clear the bumper...

Back country dispersed camping permits are free in Pennsylvania State Forests. One calls them up, a short interview process and gathering of your info. Then they mail you your permit. All free- my state taxes at work. Money grab? Not if it is done properly. And yes, I’ve spoken to a few...

    Campground Insanity

Interesting. Years ago or there were fatality accidents on the interstate (I-87, the Northway) between Albany NY and the Canadian border. Trucks were crashing, buses were crashing, cars were crashing. Each year it was getting worse, more deaths. Then about 15 years ago NY came up with the...

    Campground Insanity

There is a nice little state campground in the midst of Bald Eagle SF that has only rustic sites and two pit toilets. It’s nice in the off season, Monday thru Thursday nite. Otherwise we avoid state parks. Like it or not, terms are important. RVing is not camping. Overlanding is not...

    What is overlanding?

No way man, life is all about acquiring as much stuff as possible. The guy with the most stuff gets to heaven and wins ! Seriously, I was attracted to the S. African dude's way of thinking. It took my wife and I 25 years to get our stuff sorted out. Sticking to the principles of KISS can be...

    What is overlanding?

Most are, some are not. Once in a while we run into the real deal when we are out, but not very often. Thankfully. A couple of years ago we had a guy on our tour that became visibly angry with me because I had nary a concern about no cell service. This guy had all the high...

Genesis Dual Battery Kit - Optima vs Odyssey

I’m actually running both of them as an experiment. Both were brand new and installed 2 years ago. Both are used for starting the engine and both are usually used as house batteries. I do separate them manually when or if, the need arises. So far, each charges up to 12.9 volts. The odyssey...

    What is overlanding?

Wow! Just Wow! Nice to listen to folks that get it and can put it all into words. I’ll stop, silence can be golden.

    Jet Boil ?

It might be a long line of BS, but I’ve no doubt that Midohio gave that away, along with a crapton of other stuff over the years. Hells bells, I give stuff to people all the time. Ya just can’t take it with you, and I’d feel crummy selling it to anyone. I got my use out of it, let someone else...

    Electric powered overland vehicle

Did you actually read my second sentence? Your mathematical argument is sound, based upon current technology, ( pun intended) The ICE is twice as efficient as it was 50 years ago. You don’t think that EVs will become more efficient and increase their MPWatts?

    Electric powered overland vehicle

Oh, stop it. In another 20-25 years technologies we’ve not even heard of will be discovered. Do all the math you want but you do sound like my grandpa. He was born in 1887. As a young man he was completely against self powered vehicles. By the time he was 40 years old he had two gasoline...

These National Parks Will Require Reservations in 2022

I'm late to this party and as usual have a penny or two to contribute. Our first long trip was to the Gaspe' Peninsula back in 1997, about 1200 miles from home. We departed on Labor day. Our reasoning was, to us, quite sound. After Labor day meant all the kids were back to school,, so, no...

How do you cope when you're stuck at home?

When I retired some friends were concerned that I would just sit and watch TV. WOW, those friends didn't know me very well and have since been relegated to "positive business relationship" status. When we aren't on a long trip to the southwest, I'm either planning the next one, (my wife...

Is anything else recommended for solo besides PLB and Cell Phone?

Ha! Our kids insisted we get the PLB. Mother in law is 91, she gave up worrying about us decades ago ! LOL

Is anything else recommended for solo besides PLB and Cell Phone?

We carry a PLB, a CB, a GMRS, a handheld HAM and a cell phone. The CB and/or the GMRS might get out 10-15 miles so will never be counted upon for dire emergencies. I'd give 'em a try, one never knows, a repeater might be close enough for the GMRS or the HAM, and some one might be nearby for...

For those of you than run your fridge daily, what is the best power configuration you've found?

Until lithiums come way down in price, can withstand extreme temperatures and are easily / thoughtlessly maintained, AGMs are still the gold standard IMO. What alternator are you using? I won't be replacing mine till this one wears out, but that may be another 100,000 miles, so maybe never. Ha!

For those of you than run your fridge daily, what is the best power configuration you've found?

Dual AGMs give me roughly 100 ah. I’ve a fixed 100 watt solar panel up top and a portable 120watt panel to set up away from the vehicle when parked in the shade. Admittedly our vehicle is set up for the high plains and deserts, so when camping around here in the woods I keep a close eye on...

    Sleeping

I don’t know about creative, but over the years we have used, styrofoam pads, then an air mattress, then cots with styrofoam pads, then high end cots with roll up mattress. All these things in pretty much that order. Our sleeping bag preferences have evolved through the decades as well. Of all...
