The last few days have been busy. I have still been making the effort to do SOMETHING each day.
Got the engine section of the cart completed. That allowed me to move the monster power plant safely out to the driveway. I then labeled all of the wiring harness connections and removed the wiring...
Do it!
Eastwood has a great line of welding machines. They cost a bit more then the Chinese ones that are available but very reliable. I have had my 175 mig for almost 10 years. I have run countless spools of wire through it and it keeps going.
1 tool at a time!
I share these parts of the build process to show that anyone can do it. Go buy an affordable welding machine, watch a couple videos and build something.
As an example, on this International build, swapping in the efi 8.1 is a bit intimidating to me cause I have never messed with ecu tuning and...
So, apparently, heavy duty engine stands are Unobtainium right now....challenge excepted!
Started out buy running down to the Metal Supply yard, NOT the local home store! The metal supply will ALWAYS beat the home center prices, by A LOT!
Picked up 20' of 1 1/2" x .250" wall square tube for...
Today I got some help from a buddy. I picked up a 2 ton engine hoist from the local “Chinesium tool peddler”. We got that assembled and put it to work getting the replacement axles up on the diy rack.
The nice thing about working on the road is the ability to shop marketplace and Craigslist along my route home for parts.
Picked up these flat top D44/10 bolt knuckles in Michigan. They are brand new for a pretty good price of $250.
I also swung by a place in South Dakota that had a bunch of...
Been gathering parts....
Front 10 bolt with 4.11's and a Corporate 14 bolt full float with 4.11's
Also ordered a shackle kit that will allow me to swap to longer GM front leaf springs,
Looking forward to wrapping up this job and heading west in about a week. Plan to spend a few weeks around my place in Wyoming before I head all the way home to Washington.
I feel this boils down to communication, or the lack of it possibly.
Them - "Hey, can I go show my friend your camp spot?" (Was kind that they asked!)
You - "Sure I don't mind, just do you mind walking over so that the bikes don't make a bunch of dust and disturb the others in camp."
How we...
Thanks! I originally was thinking about putting a 5.9 Cummins in it but was a bit concerned about the weight. Even considered a Mercedes diesel. Ultimately I went with the GM cause you can walk into any parts store and get parts off the shelf.
What would have been your choice of drivetrain?
I wish there were more people out there that were willing to put the effort into resurrecting these old rigs. You can build a really nice, and capable rig for less than you can buy a new Tacoma or jeep.
Lol...Well it's enough displacement to make a good starting point. I ultimately chose to go with the 8.1 because of its ability to make huge torque #'s right off idle. With a cam swap, better flowing heads, and a different intake, this motor will make over 500 ft/lbs of torque at 1800 - 2000...
Hey Thanks! I have always loved Internationals. Would love to build a COE someday.
Not "One Day..." , Start today! Start putting your vision down on paper, Start saving any little bit of money you can towards your build. Break up the project into phases. Shop craigslist daily for the parts you...
