I've had my Xterra in rough terrain. I've been pretty off-camber many, many times. I've wheeled with other 2nd gen Xterra owners that have had their trucks in similar and worse situations. I've never experienced a side curtain airbag deployment, and I've never heard a first hand account from...
Thanks for the kind words!
I haven't updated this thread very much in the past couple of months, as I've been out of town for work quite a bit. However, as the weather starts to improve here in the PNW, I'll begin repopulating this baby with trip reports.
My recent focus with the X has been...
Hey, that's not too far from my house! Looks like quite a bit of the snow has melted in Capitol since the last time I was there. That place, although mild in the warm months, gets nasty in the winter.
I agree with everything you said. I pointed out the single Spanish company in my original response. It's also safe to assume (without having the stats in front of me) that more people drive 2nd gen Tacomas in the US than drive Navaras or Suzuki Equators in England.
I don't think this is necessarily true, especially with the 2nd gen issues. No debating that Toyotas are reliable and dependable vehicles, but many people were experiencing crippling frame rust issues within 5 years. This points t to manufacturer and supply issues.
Also, this issue is by no...
I always wanted to run Rice Peak when I lived down in Sierra Vista, but never got around to it. Have you ever ventured further south and run the likes of Gunsight Pass or Gualajote Flats?
Great pictures and nice FJ, by the way
Disregarding everything I wrote in my original response....the off-road capability of these vehicles is amazing in open terrain. The combination of IFS/IRS and the extremely wide track width provide amazing stability, ridiculous ground clearance, and relatively good suspension travel. They'll...
Nice! Aluminum or steel?
Also, how do you like the Toyo AT2s? I'm always scouting out my next set of tires and I think I want to go with something a little less aggressive than the Duratracs next time. I've narrowed it down to either the KO2s or the AT2.
I would stay far, far away. As previously stated, these things are terribly uncomfortable. I've done a fair amount of "overlanding" in them in Afghanistan and training sites in the US and I would never own one in my personal life. Despite having IFS/IRS, they ride like dump trucks. They don't...
Although I currently reside in western Washington, I'm a North Durham native and NC State grad. I constantly find myself longing for the murky rivers, Dogwood Trees, and smooth bluegrass of the Old North State.
Haven't checked your thread in a while, great updates!
Good idea going with the M205, and great find on the V8 pathfinder axles. It'll definitely toughen up the front end. Wish I had the time/ambition to do the same.
By the way, check out the most recent "Live, Work, Wander" video on their...
Camping on the Hoh River on the Olympic Peninsula this past weekend.

We then made our way to Neah Bay, the most northwestern point of the Continental United States. Not necessarily "camping"...
Yeah man. Hopefully you'll be able to trek out with us next time. I wouldn't mind hitting this same section of trail again sometime in the near future.
On Christmas Eve, our goal was to reach Upper Elk Lake in the Olympics through Washington Pass from Lake Cushman. We made it about a mile up the mountain from the south, but the snow got too slick and the incline too steep. It would have been irresponsible to keep going. Instead, we pursued an...
Another local Nissan guy (driving a yellow 1st Gen, El Bandito Amarillo) trekked out to the Olympic Peninsula on the 23rd and 24th to camp and do some high country snow exploration.
We made our way to our camp site on the shores of the Skokomish River in the darkness, narrowly avoiding a herd...
