Thanks, man, everything along the Columbia east of Portland is absolutely awesome. Definitely worth a trip with the family. However, if you're going to venture up here, you have to hit the Oregon coast, too. It's a must-see, and you can drive out onto many of the beaches.
Thanks!
The Olympic...
Been a while since I've touched this thread, so here goes.
Over Memorial Day weekend, I loaded up the X with a couple of days worth of camping gear and the tent and met some folks from the Overland Bound PNW crew to run the southernmost section of the Washington Backcountry Discovery Route...
I had a blast, and it was nice meeting you all (or seeing you again, in some instances). I'm still regretting not being able to camp with the group the 2nd night. The good news is that it looks like the dog is going to be okay, and she's currently asleep and snoring on my lap.
Looking at the weather forecast for next weekend.....I'm stoked. Hopefully the warm weather leading up to our venture will cast the late season snow remnants back into the darkness from whence it came.
That being said, recovery gear might be necessary at times. I have MaxTrax and a winch. I'm...
I wouldn't mind getting lunch someplace before heading out into the great unknown.
I'll be brining as much firewood as I can fit in the back of the Xterra. I was planning on sleeping in the X, but I'll probably bring the RTT just so I can fit more wood inside and keep it dry.
On the beer-note...
Has anyone been down that way and scouted any sections of the planned route recently? I'm a bit concerned with excessive snow considering the reported snow pack remaining in parts of the Cascades still.
Probably a safe assumption. However, I did get a "talking to" by a campground manager in Arizona once for popping the RTT in a standard tent site. She insisted that I should have been in an RV site. We clearly had different views of what defined an "RV".
Looking into reserving a site now. Does anyone know if the sites around area "B" that @jdunk mentioned will accommodate a vehicle with a roof-top tent?
Awesome! Any pictures of how the X sits now? I'm strongly considering putting in an order for a set of Alcans soon, and was thinking that 2.5 inch, 500LBs extra capacity would suit my needs. I've got PRG shackles on there already, and I don't want it to sit TOO high in the rear with new springs.
Now knowing that it's closed for the next couple months, maybe we should gauge interest in a late July trip? Naches is a fun trail and there's plenty of good camping up there.
Little update to be had.....
I know @Trixter404 posted about this in his thread already, but we took a camping trip out to the Olympic Peninsula a few weeks ago. We saw rain, we saw snow, we dangled the Xterras precariously over waterfalls, we drove through flood waters, and we drank beer...
It's nice to see people are cognizant of these guys. I always try to avoid unnecessary creek crossings, especially in places where there's obvious signs of aquatic fauna dwelling below.
Also, I miss Arizona........
Awesome trip and photos! I'm jealous of all the room inside that suburban. I know from experience how troublesome the snow in the Olympics is this time of year.
Let me know the next time you head out there and are looking for a travel partner. The Peninsula has become my 2nd home.
Understandable concern. If I had little ones, I wouldn't want to risk a side curtain deployment either. I do remember reading about disconnecting the harness. Might be something worth exploring if you have concerns. Also, there's a pretty strong Xterra cohort on this forum, so hopefully we'll be...
