Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Yes, I think part of the problem is in the city they load the inventory up with a ton of options. The F250 FX4 I looked at was nearly 2x the price of yours. When rich people come looking they just assume that's normal I guess.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I absolutely trust GM/AEV. Just not local builders (without a lot more research).

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Two of the dealers, Jeep and Toyota, 'partnered' with local 4x4 specialist to trick out some of the vehicles and that I wouldn't trust as far as I could throw it. Seemed like +$20k for a bumper, winch, and rims.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I've seen people with the ZR2s have a tiny bit of paint damage from when the bed accidentally hits the cab during install. Obviously I'll check on that during the test drive. Getting pretty close to pulling the ZR2 Bison trigger. The road ride is just so sweet given how capable it is off road...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

You're goddamn right! Also, who's excited for the follow up thread: 'Trying to select the correct RTT for first overland build'

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I've been taking notes in my notebook :grinning: Dealerships in the city are out of their minds so I'm starting inquiries slightly out of town.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Sorry did my test drives Monday after work and was pretty beat after. Here's my summary: First I drove the ZR2. I was pretty impressed impressed with how it drove on the highway, honestly better than my '04 CR-V. Obviously it wasn't a sports car but overall very please. I was comfortable...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Test driving the ZR2 (no Bisons available but the dealer says they can get one from another, distant store), maybe Canyon AT4, Jeep Gladiator Overland/Mojave and Ram 1500 Rebel tomorrow. Planning a second test drive day for the TRD OR (given its got over 1" less headroom than my CR-V and that's...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

It's all moot anyway because I'm not going to tow! I think the ZR2 Bison gas is 18/16 which is probably pretty normal for 33s, lifted, with armor. Or a stock Tacoma TRD OR

I also think the cross section of the midsize is almost the same as the half ton so you don't lose much that way when bumping up one. Plus by the time you add a 1-2" lift is generally bad for aerodynamics.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Still baffles me how midsized do worse than full size in some cases. I guess the F-150 (for example) has that 10spd trans which helps quite a bit...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Lol I guess I goofed, I meant a pedal bike! Not trying to load up a midsize with a RTT and a dirtbike. Edited my OP.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Here's my list to test drive Tacoma TRD OR - I'm probably too tall to fit comfortably and frankly it's a not the best value Colorado ZR2 Gladiator - Might not be ideal due to highway ride Ranger FX4 - See above Frontier Pro-4X when they 2022s drop Ram 1500 Rebel Trail Boss - Probably won't quite...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I address this a bit in a previous post here: Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build I also think I'm entitled to overthink it a little bit, it will easily be the biggest purchase I've ever made by almost a factor of 10!

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I have a background in experimental physics so this is really in my nature. It's hard to get a good picture of reliability because 1. you can't predict the future 2. the internet is full of enthusiasts or angry customers and not much in between 3. professional opinions may or may not be...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

So you're right. On paper, the Bison is the perfect for my needs, it would require almost no aftermarket (just a rack and eventually maybe another rear bumper), people love it, but honestly I'm a bit put out by the poor predicted reliability and only mediocre safety ratings. I know a few owners...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

First off, welcome to the party :tongueout:You raise a lot of good points. When I posted this, I realized I wasn't going to get The Answer, but was hoping to get some more opinions and try and break my Taco tunnel vision a little bit. Thanks for your comments, one of the best replies so far. I...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

I guess the question is: how reliable will that be! A few places put the 2020 above the Taco which I struggled to believe but what do I know.

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

Van is a no for me as it would not be a good daily driver, I don't have a place to store it, etc. I know people love em, but I don't think it's what I'm looking for. So, it took another look and honestly the reliability ratings for these trucks are excellent (my bad experience was in a van...

Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build

You know, I kind of scoffed when I saw people recommending full size trucks, but several people did, so I took a quick look and was a bit surprised at what I found. Milage (especially real world mileage) is basically the same as the mid sized offerings. Ram Quad Cab or F-150 gives me 4 door cab...
