Surely there is some decent dispersed camping around GW/TJ NF without going wheeling?! I know several jeep/off roading clubs in the area that camp but not looking to go that hard (yet?).
Yeah I really love the space created by putting the seats down in the back of the Colorado. I used to keep my stove in the rear footwells but have moved it to a GearPod on the rack and would be able to fit quite a bit of stuff down there. I used to just store my root veggies, cruciferous, and...
Follow up question for people who know more about recovery: would traction boards get you out of this situation or is towing/winching out the only option when you're this stuck?
Not obvious in the picture, but I have a small ratchet strap that goes around the front of the gear to prevent it from sliding forward. Found this video whis is in German but you don't need to understand it to see what's going on: I think it'd be very difficult for something to fly out of the...
Not a ton of context in the pictures but I have to wonder where they were trying to go... Just trying to camp near the water? Def bumping winch up my list of things for solo travel...
Makes sense. I'm a ham too but I've fallen out with it after several apartments with bad EMI issues. I didn't even include it here but I may eventually install a GRMS or ham radio. I really wish they had a dual licenced option!
Thanks! I love it! A few minor complaints (biggest one being that...
Thanks to all who replied, there's a lot of great info in this thread! I have been busy with some other stuff that was on a tight deadline so getting back to this a bit late, sorry. Loved looking at everybodies setups.
Just so people get an idea, this is sort of the level of 'stuff' I'm talking...
He said they failed after one use, and Maxtrax are still significantly cheaper than a recovery crew. There are a couple of other good brands like ARB or Smittybilt if you wanted to look outside of Maxtrax but they'll all cost you. Personally I would not cut corners on recovery gear.
Thanks, yours is looking good too! What made you go ham vs GRMS? I used to run an unlocked Yaesu but saw the FCC has been cracking down so I don't transmit on the GRMS frequencies. I know its a small chance of getting caught but the fines are massive.
Okay, this sounds like the simplest thing, but I'm struggling with it. Let me start off by saying I have ADHD inattentive type and I tend to set things places without realizing it and make a right mess out of well organized gear. Even on short trips my truck turns from well organize to gear...
Isn't a hi-lift jack the kind of thing you never need until you REALLY need it (like home insurance, etc)? I don't carry one myself, but I might consider it in some circumstances.
Like many here, I'm not a fan of these videos either. I think it should be more geared toward things you don't need...
I don't want to get too much into my sleep setup (there are tons of videos on youtube on how to install this rack, it's pretty simple)
Here are a couple of pics with just the rack:
Honestly not a bad solution if you want to just carry a bunch of stuff; Gear pod, traction, water, etc. I have...
So back in February '21 I started this infamous thread: Trying to select the correct vehicle for first overland build and ended up buy a Colorado ZR2 Bison in Black. Name is partially a tribute to my dad, who sadly did not live to see this truck (he named his old Silverado Betty, presumably...
