    Leaving the USA.

@Indigoblue I would give you the same advice if you head north into Canada as @Alanymarce do not carry a firearms, pistols and most of the AR platform are out any way. Shotguns are generally ok, IF YOU DO ALL THE PAPERWORK. But given your idea is for self defense if you did in fact shoot at...

[Gear Map] How would YOU do it? Load this rig for a weeks-long adventure for two

I would say the come along has little utility, most are too light for vehicle use. The only thing I would consider is, do you have any doubts about rad hoses, battery, alternator or belts. On the electrical items although you can have them load checked, if your alternator is old it can...

    Overpacking

Part of overpacking is comfort, as I have gotten older comfort matters more. 40 years ago I could toss a sleeping bag, canvas carry-all with clothes, cooler, Coleman stove and lantern, and 1 pot and perk coffee maker, small tent and tarp. I would like to think could get down that again but...

How do the first gen Xterras/Frontiers compare to 1G Tacomas/3G 4runners?

One thing on the Nissen, Land Rover and even Toyota (early on not anymore) to a large extent they gave up on the US market. Jeep was probably and still is the leader in 4x4 sales in the US. Add in various buy-American initiatives, tariffs etc made the US market a tough sell. So lots of...

FUN: Fantasy Gear Map - Suggestions may be added

Well that was interesting but if you are like me that will last for maybe 2 trips, I review my gear every 6 months and often adjust my packing between trips. But I am kind of a random guy at best, I always have the shovel, TP, and 1st aid kit right at hand though.

    New year new plans

@MOAK it seems to be pretty hit or miss on the Dempster, lots of folks have zero issues and some have no luck. The shale is the problem it is like little tiny knives, airing down a bit and dropping your speed is the best protection.

@Alanymarce yea 400 maybe 450 to the low fuel light on the Discovery, on 90 odd liter tank, you have 20 left but that is sucking the bottom. - that big V8 and the weight sucks up gas. I carry 40 liters as a just in case gets me another 200ish. Thanks for your thoughts, I tend to wander too

    New year new plans

So as I was setting up to swap alternators (temporary to new) I went down the spare parts rabbit hole. Now 5000 miles is not a huge amount of miles, but Murphy can be a bit of a problem. So I thought about what I realistically can fix on the road, it is a pretty short list, I drive a 2004 LR...

    BC Route Advice

@IceIceBaby42 That is a tough one, I live here and tend to avoid touristy places. It kind of depends on where you are, as to what is worth seeing, we have a lot less outside of the general Vancouver area than you will find down south, and large portions of BC are pretty empty. Barkerville is...

    BC Route Advice

@IceIceBaby42 a couple of things there can be snow on some of the higher off-road passes in June around 6400M in shady spots you can have a couple of feet. We have a pretty good provincial reporting service for roads, not always up to date but it can give you an idea. Resource road safety...

Stock vehicle electrical limits and when to upgrade

@smritte hit the high points but also consider what your alternator output is on my Discovery II it is 130 now but the stock unit was 100. One advantage is that you can go LED for your off-road lights, which cuts your amp draw way down over halogen etc. Battery condition cranking amps and...

    Getting Lost...

I would say yes, but less because you get "lost", although your story is great, but all the gadgets lead to point-to-point driving. If you are driving from memory or paper maps , you make wrong turns and you go slower. The end result is you see more, and are likely to take that "short cut" and...

    New year new plans

Basic day-to-day up done, this is not a hard push and will take about 7-9 days - planned this 3 years ago then Covid. Note there is not a lot of Tourist time indicated depending on the group which may add several days to the trip. That will be decided among the group if this ends up being a go...

    New year new plans

I have a couple of options this year either Tuk or Haida Gwaii, both are on the longish side time-wise. Tuk would be about 24 days from Vancouver up and back and just under 7821 Km round trip. Hadia Gwaii is about 3600 Km round trip - not including travel on the island itself, plus a ferry ( 8...

    Need advice concerning inverter

I don't think so the voltage is too low most of them seem to run out at 42V. But you led me down the rabbit hole of checking, it is bizarre to me that there is nothing for small trailers outside of Blue Sea. I found some Chinese stuff that was cheap but none of it is UL or CSA approved...
