As you’ve said, a good reminder. I always have my Mom travel with a SPOT & PLB because she’s remote & solo a lot. I’ve essentially always been with a passenger (buddy, girlfriend, now wife). In the last year I’ve begun overnighting with just the kids. Last Thursday, I was remote above Lake...
Check out the recent NWOL post showing Cassidy Steed’s wife nearly toppling her Jeep off the road when part of it gave way. Might have been a good time to miss that trail.
Whew!! Makes my projects seem much more manageable. Kudos to you - PNW weather can make anything a little more challenging. Sounds like your wife is quite the good sport!
As 4 Maxtrax will cost you more than a winch, be aware there are lower price options out there (though they don’t stack as efficiently-especially 4). X-Bull overstock are as little as $63/pair on eBay. Many folks have run them with no problems.
I think it is the best 5th Gen Comms set up I’ve seen. As you noted, it swivels for driver or passenger. This spring they added another support bar to decrease the vibration. As they are in & out of coverage, here is a side photo of his setup from ExpoWest this year
My wife & I agree 100%
The area between Mt. St. Helens & Mt. Adams is nice
Also Tillamook State Forest off OR 6
FYI
OR FS Fire Rules for Vehicles
Shovel 8+" blade & 26+" handle
Fire Extinguisher 2.5# or 1g H2O
Oh they’re certainly okay. We plan to wear ours down a bit before replacing. Particularly as my Mom drives it back & forth between KC & Seattle several times s year. I’ve done UT, Northern AZ & some of the dry Cascades in the stock tires & really, the clearance & base drivetrain (to say nothing...
Agree, love Gold Beach. Also consider driving the road along the Rogue River through the Siskyous.
Depending on your time, it’s not that far to drop down to Avenue of the Giants, Jebediah SP in CA & Eureka-all greats.
When we lived in PDX we would always do an October loop over to Bend, Down...
Lots to do around Bend. Check out the lava tubes-there’s one under the highway between Sunriver & Bend but also some backcountry ones.
Another unique spot to stay in Bend is McMenamins’ Old St. Francis School. Probably best without kids (& dogs)-which is why we don’t go there any more. Check...
I would earnestly 2nd all of this.
CBs: terrible but cheap & fairly common. Radios are inexpensive & require virtually no skill or training. Invariably the sole comm for some people in any group. Truckers don’t use them like they did in the 70s & 80s but still sometimes useful in highway...
I’ve camped at Labryrinth A & B before - it’s a nice campsite. The first time we just peeked in from that side & then went back & over the top to the other side. The 2nd time it was the start of a full circumnavigation, seeing Taylor Cyn & camping at Airport on the other side. I can’t recall if...
I’ll defer to the CO folks on the snow but UT is pretty good in October. Really cuts down on the tourists (though still pretty busy with Europeans).
Not sure of your route but if Medano Pass dropping into Great Sand Dunes NP in CO fits, I’d include it. Should be able to dispersed camp along it...
I was just there about 2 weeks ago & once you cross the dam there is a gate across the road heading to the right back toward Concrete. We went left but were stopped at the trailhead as a big crane was putting a new outhouse in place
