I usually do a little more than just camping but I have an old Honda 1000 watt I use for running fishing/camping lights and charging big batteries with an automotive battery charger. The generator frees up the deep cycle for the water pump, bait aerators and a small 80 watt inverter used for...
Hmmm, while I've used their method to find interesting places, I wouldn't call it the best method.
They won't find what they want in the US because part of the population wants to cluster together, the other part wants to get away from each other and everyone wants the freedom to travel easily...
That's a fun little loop, right about now is also when you'll want to swing to the west a bit for a hike through Lost Maples SP and Garner SP in Conan for the leaves changing and the cooler weather chasing away the crowds. Fredericksburg is also nice this time of year.
A friend of mine has consistently had expensive stuff fail just after replacing the air conditioner compressor. That's his flag to trade it in.
Another friend of mine will trade a Ford off at the first minor oil leak but replace every steering and suspension component, ac compressor, etc. on a...
HF and the other economy priced winches can be hit or miss. I like the traveller one at tractor supply but I've burnt up a few on farm equipment like an experimental t-post/small tree puller. I've got a 3k pound one I rigged up as a utility winch that hooks onto a heavy chain.
Salt spray? Driving through the ocean? Lol
-Texan
I'll say that the snow birds (northerners who come to Texas and other southern states to avoid white fluffy stuff and sub-freezing temps) tend to wash their awnings and rigs out very thoroughly if they don't make it to the south before salt...
Lack of money and the fact that if I use my days off I almost get punished by growing and evolving piles of work and people complaining about why it didn't magically get done while I was away.
That said, while I don't do many of the long "overland" trips anymore, the short...
I second the weather station idea. I use the wireless indoor/outdoor thermometers with the outdoor sensor mounted inside my big cooler on the lid. It is for fish/game so meat spoilage in a concern. The indoor is mounted somewhere on/around the dash. I don't see any reason why you couldn't take...
You'll probably want to find a tire plug kit before your next outing. I've used multiple plugs on the same hole when a good sized stick punched into a tractor tire. It actually held for a good while and would probably hold in a truck tire long enough to get to a tire shop.
Dumb question, is the vehicle feeding the battery when you place that load on the inverter? How much battery is on the other end of the inverter?
At nearly 1500 watts, 115 amps at 13v plus any inefficiency in the wire and inverter, you're pulling juice quick. Unless it is a massive bank, that...
5 gallon bucket with other dirty stuff like tent and tie out stakes, chain, etc.
But I also use a small camp shovel and camp hatchet so it all fits easy.
I saw a big cat that had been hit on the side of the road just outside Sargent, Tx, only about 20 minutes from the coast on my last trip. They may be called mountain lions, but they have no problems with the low land.
I've been putting air compressor drain valves in my plastic fuel cans.
Lowes part number 221037
I stepped down to the drill bit smaller so that the brass threads would hold in the plastic. Works better than any other vent and since it is brass it doesn't break down in gasoline, ethanol or...
Howdy, I'm just down the road in San Marcos.
For regular camping, TPWD has lots of parks scattered through TX which is nice if you are on a multi-day trip.
I usually go to the coast for fishing where all you need is a county permit.
I build stuff all the time because either a) the market doesn't have exactly what I need or b) whoever does sell it thinks I'm an idiot with tons of money. Some people have more money than sense so it doesn't hurt my feelings when they voluntarily rob themself, but I'm short on money.
At work...
