Rooftop tents typically have their own aluminum crossbars that mount to the strong outer rails that run the length of the roof.
They do not mount to the relatively flimsy OEM cross bars. Because the rails are flush to the roof on your vehicle, you are going to need a different roof rack...
Your tire size is fine. Your bolt on steps will cause issues.
I recommend keeping the rails themselves, but cutting the steps off.
That, or just don't be surprised when they get folded over.
I carry daily a Leatherman Skeletool. The ergonomics are cursed and no aspect is comfortable to use, but it has a knife, wire cutter, standard pliers, needle nose pliers, 4 screwdriver bits, and a bottle opener all in a small form that clips in your pocket. I've broken it 3 times and was sent...
I carry pretty much everything everyone else has mentioned, plus a soldering iron. The small irons will run off any cheap 100w inverter. I had one that plugged directly into a 12v port before I had a vehicle with a factory inverter. I've used it to booger weld a plastic gas cap back together...
Get one of your grandma's hat pins and "drill" it into the roll before you install it in the holder. It keeps it from unrolling, but the towels easily tear around it. Hat pins cost next to nothing and the towel holder I'm using was like $8.
I was about 10 miles outside of the George Washington National Forest, gassing up for a few days of relaxation and exploration. My FJ had a little lift, snorkel, awning, and rooftop tent. Nothing special amongst this group, but it stands out in a parking lot full of regular stuff. Some dude...
My top 5:
Disable the DRLs
Get a LightInSight for the windshield
Bolt an awning to the roof rack, if equipped
Add some rock rails if you don't already have them
Get a Trasharoo or comparable to hang on the spare tire
I used to sleep in the back of my XJ as well. With the front seats slid all the way forward, the rear seat back removed, and the footwell filled, there's a surprising amount of room!
I'm an RTT guy, but I sleep okay in a good cot as well. I got a heavy-duty big guy model a few years back. I use it when staying with family and occasionally bring it along for lounging in camp or stargazing.
I'm from the Virginia Beach area, where snow is rare and slight. I decided that I wanted to experience camping in the snow. I was watching the forecast for an area of the George Washington National Forest along the VA/WV line, and found a time where it had gotten about 6" of snow, with about...
I have an oven mitt with a plastic cup inside. In that cup is two sets of silverware and a pair of scissors. I also bring a spatula and a long spoon. One pot. One pan. A lid that fits both. Paper plates make cleanup easy.
I am happy to abide the important principles that protect the outdoors. But paying for access changes the dynamic. When you're at home, you take out your own trash and wash your own towels. When you stay in a hotel, that's a service included in the price of your stay. Charging fees for...
I used to love the Outer Banks. Up until about 5 years ago, Carova Beach and Oregon Inlet were both free to drive to access. I'm in southeastern VA, so it was an easy day trip to run down, cruising the beach, grab some dinner, and come home. Now everything is pay to play because people wanted...
