Who is a Vet, Active or First Responder?

During the lockdowns, a lot of people were forced into the "first responder" category. Turns out you can't keep a fire station open if it's not habitable, so all the trades people and utility workers got lumped in as well. That's fair recognition of their importance, but it can't come solely...

    Remote Jobs

Sounds like an interesting future career. Wonder if the opportunity will still exist in 9 years when I'm able to retire from what I'm doing now?

    How would you start over?

I made my decision yesterday. All I ever talk about is how good my FJ was. I was really impressed with the current 4Runner, but that was because of how much the dash reminded me of my FJ. With that in mind, I decided to build another FJ. I'd like to find a 13-14, but I'm open to other deals...

    Portable Tire Kit

I have two tips to offer: Add a weatherproof exterior plug. I originally set mine up that way to run the tent lights, but I quickly discovered the convenience of having a receptacle for the compressor. My ViAir 85p just uses a standard 12v plug. I intentionally kept it a short run from the...

    Trasharoo or Campcover?

That's how much I hated the idea of trash being inside the vehicle. Plus, it also gave me a place to mount my 11 lb propane tank. The next, even more expensive option is a swing-out so you have the spare on it from which to hang the bag.

What's do you think the most impactful first upgrade is to a rig?

I will add that you don't necessarily have to pay for training. That's part of what this community is for. Pick an area, create an event, and let it be known what you want to work on: picking lines, using a winch, Hi-Lift operation, feeling what is like to lift a tire, etc.

What's do you think the most impactful first upgrade is to a rig?

One note for beginners: unless you've wheeled your stock rig sufficiently enough to find it lacking, you don't really know if you even need a lift.

What's do you think the most impactful first upgrade is to a rig?

Tires suited for an off-road environment are a game changer. Not only will they enhance the capabilities of any vehicle off pavement, aggressive treads and puncture-resistant sidewalls afford you a lot of protection that isn't there with street tires. Good tires can literally be the difference...

    Trasharoo or Campcover?

A possibility is a NashFabCo ladder for the back and the bag hung from the ladder, like I have now. I just worry about what the struts are capable of holding up.

    Trasharoo or Campcover?

I need a good answer to that question as well. I love everything about the current 4Runner, and keeping trash OUT of the vehicle is part of my whole system. I need to find a solution for that issue before I make my next step on new vehicle selection.

    Dedicated rig vs. Daily driver?

I say build, drive, and maintain one vehicle per person. My wife has a stock econobox for going to dinner or to visit family. Financially, considering not only purchase price, but also operating/maintenance costs, taxes, registration, plates, insurance, etc., just feeding your overland rig a...

    Trasharoo or Campcover?

I went with the standard size because I have it hanging between the tail light and license plate. I was going through a Trashroo every other year or so with a previous setup. I imagine this material will hold up for a decade or more. Even better, it has a lifetime guarantee and an...

    Mr. heater "Little Buddy" experience?

A little heat comes from the front, a lot of heat comes from the top. I run a battery-powered fan blowing down on it when I use it in the tent to best disperse the heat. A kerosene heater may be more useful for the area in question, since you'll get 360° of heat from it, plus the top.

    How would you start over?

I'm facing the same dilemma. In 2020, I went from a 2007 FJ Cruiser, which I was completely in love with and ready to drive for eternity, to trying to find a comparable vehicle in the lockdown market when insurance provided a not-yet-adjusted replacement value and 30¢ on the dollar for all the...

Does Overlanding Require You to Go Off Pavement?

Being a part of this community, filled with thousands of amazing builds, it's very easy to forget that almost everyone around the world are doing amazing adventures with stock rigs. Here, and places like this, we're just in a niche that showcases the modified. As a percentage of what's on the...

    Virginia OLB Members

I've gone up both sides with what's basically a stock 4Runner.

    Off-road alone.

I spend a lot of time alone. Sometimes maybe too much. A few years ago, after several days in the woods not talking to anyone, I cut on the radio and was relieved to hear the voice of another human. The novelty of that experience always amuses me.

    Tablet mounting ideas?

See if anything from Panavise suits your needs. The website is straight out of GeoCities, but their products are top notch. https://www.panavise.com/index.html?pageID=1&id1=30&startat=1&--woSECTIONSdatarq=30&--SECTIONSword=ww The one I have in my GX mounts to the left opening of the glove...

    Considering a 2023 Chevy Silverado 2500

That almost says, "Buy the camper, put it on a cheap trailer, enjoy it, and buy the truck when vehicles get reasonable again."
