+1 to carrying the sizes and types of tools relevant to your vehicle. In most cases a metric socket can be substituted for any given imperial size, so if you do need a 3/4" socket to help someone out a 19mm one will likely work as a substitute.
I don't use adjustable wrenches on my truck at...
As mentioned above tools really depend on the vehicle and what scope of projects you want to take on. Often forums focused on a specific make/model of vehicle will have a good list of common tools required for maintenance tasks on that vehicle.
I listed the tools and repair gear I carry in my...
If the old tire was in decent shape perhaps the valve stem was leaking? If you were running street pressure at the time I'd be surprised if the bead was leaking, I've only had that happen at low pressures.
I sent a PM to Llama Paul on ExPo and included a link to this thread. The fire is under control, but I figured he'd be happy to know the community was thinking of him.
To clarify, are you thinking of running the trail from West to East? That direction is generally easier, but I haven't run it this year so I can't speak to current trail conditions. It's entirely possible that people went through early in the season while the trail was wet and dug ruts, which...
I never found anything I really liked, so I'm still using some inexpensive plastic plates and bowls from Target. They aren't exciting, but the've held up well during lots of camping trips. I added two small stainless bowls that I use for mixing and holding food scraps (not shown in picture).
Yes, the picnic table is at a campsite right next to the lake. I should mention that the last ~100 yards of the trail is extremely rocky and most vehicles would risk damage on that section. We decided to park and walked the rough section since we didn't have time to try to drive it.
Thanks...
Hi Mark,
Some friends and I explored the Shaver Lake area last year. All of us were on 32" tires and we had no problem getting to the top of Bald Mountain (took one of the harder routes) and out to Brewer Lake. Here are some photos from the trip...
It doesn't wind up on the ground at a campsite, that's what we're discussing here.
There are some interesting articles available about what happens to bleach that goes into the sewer and winds up at a wastewater treatment facility.
Bleach can damage the environment. I recommend instead using a biodegradable soap like Campsuds, and disposing of your grey water far from natural water sources. If we have a fire we use our gray water to make sure the fire is 100% out.
For washing dishes we first scrape off as much food as...
Based on the subject I thought this thread was going to be asking "how much should I spend on my overlandy rig?", which would be a new twist on "what are the first X mods I should do?".
If the question is "how much is too much to spend on an overlandy rig?", then like the above questions...
What are you going to do with the truck? A stock 4Runner is very capable from the factory. Any mods will depend highly on what kind of trails you are going to run and what kind of trips you plan.
Unfortunately I could only find one photo of the tires, I guess I need to take more truck pictures. I was testing to see where the rubbed, and the picture doesn't give a good idea of the "stance".
Yesterday I drove 320 miles from near sea level to 7800ft (Kirkwood ski resort) and back. Overall mpg driving 70-75 mph on the freeway and a little over speed limit in the mountains was ~19mpg.
At one point after dropping ~5k feet my Scanguage read 30mpg. :) Overall gas mileage on the way...
What are your goals for the second battery?
Some people have shifted away from dual batteries towards a portable power system for their "house" circuits. The benefits are better decoupling from the main battery, portability (can transfer to another vehicle), and easier replacement or upgrades...
It seems like the firewall has become more strict again. Several times in the last few days I've opened ~5 tabs in somewhat quick succession and then gotten locked out of the site for 10-15 min, which is pretty annoying.
