We went to the Rally and it was a blast! We just wish it was a day longer so we could have spent more time talking to vendors and taking in some of the great clinics they offered. We spent most of our time out on the trails and Forest Service roads. Here's a short video of our experience there;
This is a short report about our time attending one of our first overland rallies.
Normally Merri and I tend to be solo overlanders. We enjoy the freedom of going at our own pace, going anywhere at any time we want, and above all the solitude. Video capturing and photos are also a huge part of...
Not to nit-pik, but wouldn't a propane fire be considered a campfire too? They too are capable of getting out of hand and starting a wildfire.
We simply put one of these on the ground in front of us and stare.

The spot I had in mind is off FR288 on Flat Branch Trail.
Looking at the size and expense of your rig; I wouldn't advise you to go in there either.
I'd look for the spot Brian above suggested.
Hurricane Creek Trail can be done with a stock 4wheel drive but would be better with some added ground clearance and good tire tread. We had a couple stock Jeeps and an Extera with us and with a little help they made it through. We also had a couple full size pickups along. They made it through...
Pro; Solid recovery points. The stock "toe hooks" are incredibly weak and are rated only to be used when being pulled up onto a flat bed from a road surface.
As far as safety in a crash; in a low speed incident a full steel bumper will probably be an advantage. In a high speed crash where the...
We drove it last July. It's a must do if you're ever in the area. There's also an old cabin along the way and Echo Park Campground is a nice place to camp. We feature the Yampa Bench Road in one of our videos. It starts at 5:33.
Unfortunately there's nothing near Rockford. The closest is a small offroad park in McHenry. The next closest is The Badlands ORP, three hours away in Indiana.
Merri and I are planning to be at the River Road Rally Park in McHenry Illinois for a little light wheeling on May 5th if anyone would like to join us.
The Trans Wisconsin Trail can be done in three days but that doesn't include the time getting to the start and driving home after the end. If time is short, I would suggest you start the trail at Black River Falls and go north. That's the most scenic and fun part of the route anyways.
We can't justify the price of Maxtrax either that's why we run with the much less expensive Maxsa boards. We've been using the heck out of them for years and have never had an issue with them breaking. We mount ours on our spare tire with a simple ratchet strap and when we're in a populated area...
We're heading down from Northern Illinois early Thursday morning. If any of you would like to join our convoy you're more than welcome! We're coming up with times and locations now. Check out our Facebook page this evening (Sunday) for the list of stops we'll be making, where you can join up...
Have you switched from a RTT to a ground tent? Started out with a ground tent, went to a RTT, found out you didn’t like it and went back to the ground? Or, the other way around? Do you regret buying one? Are they mostly just a gimmicky thing? It’s okay, you can tell us the truth.
Sometimes...
