    Battery’s and multiple battery’s

Recently installed an ODYSSEY EXTREME Model 34R-PC1500T GROUP 34 BATTERY in my 2016 4Runner. The summers here in AZ are battery killers. When you add vibration from what we do to the mix, regular batteries don't last long and are unreliable. Running solo a lot, a dependable battery is...

    Arizona Overlanders

Attempted to run the El Camino del Diablo last January travelling west to east. Unfortunately it had been a wet winter down there. Wet and the ECDD don't mix. The Pinta sands turn to a bottomless sludge that is beyond slick and dries on your vehicle like concrete. Managed to self recover...

What Camp Saw Do You Use? (Non-powered hand saws)

Silky BigBoy 2000 folding saw. It sees use around the house as well. Serious cutting ability. Wear gloves and be careful.

The Quest for the Best Knife.

With an extensive collection of bushcraft and survival knives to choose from here are my usual overlanding choices for edged tools: Mora Craftline HQ in stainless in the chuck box (stainless won't rust like the normal carbon steel Mora blades, thus an excellent food prep choice). I normally...

    RCI Metalworks Discount

Got a full set of their skid plates on my 2016 4Runner. Easy to install and so far zero issues.

    Coffee Set Ups

Backpacking is Jetboil, VIA packet and a packet of hot chocolate in my mug. Overlanding is Jetboil, a Stanley coffee press, and beans I ground at home. Jetboil is quick. Let the ground soak in the Stanley and press after 10 minutes. The Stanley keeps it warm all morning as I drive.

    White Rim Trail

Just completed my first White Rim run in October as part of a solo 2-week SE Utah trip. You will love it. White Crack campsite is fantastic if you can get it.

    Solo, Co-pilot, or Group?

The job gives me weird schedules, so planning a group is difficult. Sometimes my wife serves as chief camp operator and spotter. But a lot of times I go solo (InReach, lots of recovery gear, a vehicle in great condition, and an abundance of caution). I also hike and backpack a lot and do...

    4runner guys...kdss ir no kdss

When I put 33s on my 2016 Trail the spare wouldn't fit in the normal spare location because of the KDSS bar running beside the space. Not a deal breaker since I was putting on a tire carrier anyway, but one thing I hadn't considered.

    Ford chirping the 4Runner?

My 4Runner goes to the mall nicely too (without me in it of course), but that's not why I bought it. Would like to see this POS on the the way to the Dollhouse. Like comparing bananas with buffaloes.

    Coffee Set Ups

For cowboy coffee don't put the grinds in until the water cools off the boiling point. Boiling water releases a lot of the acid in the coffee making it bitter. Lesson learned the hard way. While I currently use a Stanley press for overlanding, with a larger group I go back to cowboy coffee...

Ground, Cot or Air Mattress: Make and model please.

We do two different cot setups. The first is a pair of OZTENT's Jet Tent Bunkers. These are a little heavy but very very comfortable when paired with a self-inflating pad. We use a couple of Thermorest knocks off the wife found at Costco a couple years back. These things are tough. I've...

    A question about water storage

Here in the desert Southwest water planning is a high priority. My current system is two Front Runner Universal Jerry Can Mounts. I mix water and fuel carriage as required by the trip. I've added brass quarter turn spigots to the water cans. Those feed a 10' marine grade hose run along my...

    Garmin to aquire Delorme

Biggest loss was DeLorme's customer service. They were a great small company. You actually talked to a knowledgeable person in the US. Imagine that!!! With the advent of InReach, Garmin saw a small competitor really making a name for itself and gaining a larger market share. Garmin is huge...

    Paper Maps Brand

Been happy with the Benchmark Road and Recreation books. Seldom have to use them, but having paper maps makes me a lot more comfortable if I need to do make some decisions in the field.

    InReach Explorer hahaha

Garmin bought DeLorme back in early 2016 . If you are seeing a DeLorme InReach it is from the Delorme last production runs. When they are gone, they are gone. Like the other comments, vital for emergencies, good for comm in remote places, great gps for iPad or iPhone via blue tooth, sucks...

How well or detailed do you plan your trips? route/timeline/campspot

I always have a few trips in the planning stage. When I hear about a destination or a trail that I'd like to do someday, it gets a file on the computer. Related information gets added over time -- nearby places, restaurants that sound unique, maybe some oddball lodging, little known spots...

What is your favorite overlanding movie, video, book, story, or inspiration?

Have you ever watched 127 Hours backward? It is a heart warming story of an amputee who finds and arm that fits in the middle of the desert. Loved it!
